This is the basis of all Dharmas, and it is very important, so it must be taken seriously. Instruction Section 58. The seventh topic is the method of cultivating the four immeasurables, which has three aspects: First, generate joy in cultivation by contemplating the benefits; second, the actual method of cultivation; and finally, practicing to become proficient. The first point is: If you do not cultivate the four immeasurables, you cannot attain Buddhahood; if you cultivate them, you can attain Buddhahood, so you must cultivate them. Loving-kindness is pleasing in all temporary situations and ultimately achieves the Sambhogakaya; compassion is without harm and achieves the Dharmakaya; joy is without jealousy and achieves the Nirmanakaya; equanimity makes the mind workable and achieves the Svabhavikakaya. Furthermore, in the desire realm, one can achieve the bodies of gods and humans, bringing benefit and happiness; in order to manifest the qualities of samadhi in the form realm and pure birth places. I should contemplate the benefits and strive to cultivate, thus practicing with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion. Instruction Section 59. Then there are four points to the actual method of cultivation. First, in cultivating equanimity, there are also two aspects: object of focus and aspect. The object of focus is what needs to be understood after a comprehensive examination: It is unreasonable to have attachment to one's own side, such as parents and relatives, and hatred towards enemies and their side. Because in previous lives, this enemy was also a friend, and a friend was also an enemy, so it is uncertain. Moreover, even now, the enemy cannot always cause harm, and if one is compliant, they may bring benefits like a friend. Friends may also say unpleasant words, fight, seize property, and if one is dissatisfied with them, it will cause pain in one's own mind, so in reality, they are like enemies. In the future, friends may become enemies, and enemies may become friends, because there is no certainty. Abandoning closeness and distance, attachment and hatred towards one's own side and hatred towards others, contemplate the principle of treating enemies and friends equally. Looking at all sentient beings in this way is focusing on the object. The aspect of the mind is that, in this way, from one sentient being to two, three, to one village, to one region, to one continent, to the edge of space, without attachment, aversion, or focus on closeness or distance, cultivate with great equanimity through the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion. Instruction Section 60. Then there is the cultivation of loving-kindness, which also has two aspects.

Therefore, the object is all sentient beings, just as wishing that all sentient beings without happiness may meet with happiness. How many sentient beings are there without happiness! Through loving-kindness, seeing them as objects to be cared for, thinking: May they all meet with happiness. The state of mind should be like treating one's own parents, wishing them to meet with loved ones. Then, from one sentient being to all sentient beings, meditate in this way. Finally, abide in a state without any attachment, thus possessing the three parts of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion, thereby practicing. This is the sixty-first guiding instruction. Then, when meditating on compassion, contemplate those sentient beings who are tormented by intense suffering, which is unbearable. The state of mind is: May they be separated from this suffering. Cultivate this intense compassion from one sentient being to all sentient beings. Afterwards, abide for a moment in a state without any attachment, which constitutes the three parts of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion. This is the sixty-second guiding instruction. Then there is joy. From any sentient being in the heavenly realms who is happy and joyful, whether great or small, take all aspects of happiness as the object. The state of mind is: May I never be separated from this happiness, and may I be even more joyful and happy than this, with a longer life, more retinue, abundant resources, no harm, great wisdom, and so on, until I attain Buddhahood. Apply this from one sentient being to all sentient beings. Especially for those who harm oneself, and those who cause jealousy in one's mind, repeatedly practice, and finally abide in the state of emptiness, thus possessing the three parts of preliminary, main practice, and conclusion, thereby practicing. This is the sixty-third guiding instruction. Then there is practicing the skills. There is a definite order: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, these four are meditated on in sequence. Then meditate in reverse, from equanimity to loving-kindness. Meditate alternately on loving-kindness and joy, compassion and equanimity. Practice becoming familiar in every moment. These are all practiced by being encompassed by the three: the preliminary generation of bodhicitta, the main practice of diligently abiding in that very state without attachment, and the conclusion of dedication. This is the sixty-fourth guiding instruction. The eighth meaning is the precepts for generating the supreme bodhicitta.
