It is for the sake of desiring Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, I abandon the divisions of small and medium persons, and in order to benefit all sentient beings, I should study the conduct of great persons, and practice it with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice. This is the sixty-sixth guiding instruction. Then, contemplate the benefits: If one wanders in samsara and seeks refuge in worldly deities, why not seek refuge in the Three Jewels, which abide in the supreme state of fearlessness and liberation? Kings and others who are difficult to rely on and who bestow harm should not be taken as protectors and refuges. Merely by taking refuge in them, one sows the seeds of liberation, distances oneself from the accumulation of non-virtue, increases virtue, is suitable as the basis for all vows, and becomes the source of all qualities. In this life, one is also protected by the gods of the white side, and one's wishes are fulfilled as desired. One constantly remembers past lives, is inseparable from the appearance of the Three Jewels, is happy in this life and the next, and ultimately attains the state of Buddhahood, etc. Contemplate these immeasurable benefits and practice them with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice. This is the sixty-seventh guiding instruction. Then, the way to take refuge is: After taking refuge and generating the mind of enlightenment, in the center of the sky in front, on a lion throne and lotus, sun, moon, and jewel, visualize the Lama and Buddha as inseparable and abiding. Surrounded by a multitude of Bodhisattvas and a sea of Dakinis and Dharma protectors, filling the sky. I and all sentient beings join our palms on the ground, and from this time until the essence of enlightenment, we offer ourselves to you, we rely on you, and there is no other place of hope or refuge other than you. Thinking in this way, with a beautiful voice: I take refuge in the Lama! I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha! After reciting as much as possible, I and all sentient beings dissolve into the Three Jewels. They also dissolve into the central Lama Buddha Jewel. They also dissolve into the Dharmakaya, the empty nature free from elaboration. Then, relax in a state where there is nothing to focus on, and meditate for as long as the mind can abide. Then, dedicate the merit.
