Not necessarily. Awareness is clear, or blissfully harmonious, without thought and bright, or relaxed, all three of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise. In the 'Lamp of Experience' it says: 'Thereafter, like a river of varying speed, sometimes with thought, sometimes without thought, abiding for half a session.' Thus it is said. The third, the experience of increase, is: for one session or until noon, or for half a session, without sinking, dullness, excitement, or scattering, all three of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise, or it occurs to abide without certainty as to which is stronger. In the 'Lamp of Experience' it says: 'Thereafter, like a slowly flowing river, awareness rests and abides in a session.' Thus it is said. Second, identifying the nature of samadhi, there are three: The best is that in equipoise, all three of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise simultaneously, and that also experiences arise internally and externally, not like thinking the mind is inside, but in a state where one's own mind is naturally blissful, and the nature of clarity is determined to be inseparable, awareness arises and abides single-pointedly, unlike the wisdom of prior hearing and thinking, but with the joy of certain understanding of experiencing the meaning as it is, like someone seeking something accomplishing their goal. It occurs at the time of equipoise of the mind's natural luminosity. In the 'Lamp of Experience' it says: 'Equality, free from objects, samadhi, abiding naturally without distraction, is the realm of activity of the best person.' Thus it is said. The middling is that clarity and purity arise, and although one knows that it is the nature of one's own mind, there arises grasping of conceptual thoughts and luminosity separately. Dampa (Gampopa) said: 'The middling one, the mind's nature is luminosity, sees it as the manner of object and awareness.' Thus it is said. The lowest is that in a state of bodily bliss and mental joy, awareness abides harmoniously without scattering. Dampa (Gampopa) said: 'The lowest one, free from the defilement of thoughts, abides merely without moving.' Thus it is said. In the post-meditation state: The best is that when mindfulness is grasped, the mind is self-appearing, and when it is not grasped, there is little ordinary grasping of reality. The middling is that when mindfulness is grasped, one thinks it is like an illusion, without inherent existence, and when it is not grasped, one acts as ordinary. The lowest is that grasping of reality arises spontaneously. In the 'Lamp of Experience' it says: 'When post-meditation awareness is not grasped, ordinary scattering is abandoned, when mindfulness is grasped, ordinary clinging turns into non-clinging, grasper and grasped turn into non-grasping, knowing it is an illusion, meeting arises and self-returns.' Thus it is said. Third, to constantly increase the samadhi of equipoise in one's own mind-stream

The three methods are: Like a rich person needing to hire slaves. The superior one, in all four activities of walking, staying, sitting, and lying down, observes all appearances and existences, deciding everything in the mind. Through meditation, the self-luminous awareness that is inseparable from the object and the mind is integrated into the continuum. The Secret Lamp says: Whatever four activities are done, if controlled by the reins of the mind, this is the supreme method of abiding, its meaning is the same as the mind of the Buddha. The intermediate one recognizes the luminosity of equanimity as the clear and empty essence of one's own awareness in the present moment, abiding without change, not being distracted by any appearances, but maintaining the focus of awareness. Because non-distraction must be integrated into the path, the Practice Lamp says: Like taming a wild horse, one must meditate without distraction. The inferior one forcibly abandons all distractions of body, speech, and mind, and strives to maintain the balance of body and mind for as long or short a time as possible. The Holy One said: In a place undefiled by inner and outer distractions, meditate repeatedly. Fourth, regarding the duration of meditation sessions, there are three types: When the body and mind are comfortable and the samadhi is clear, the meditation session can be longer. When the body and mind are agitated and unclear, the meditation session can be shorter and more frequent. Because the two middle periods of day and night, and the two transition periods, are times of dullness and agitation, one should strive to meditate during the four periods of dusk, dawn, morning, and afternoon, and after becoming accustomed to it, one can integrate it into daily activities, and there should be no gaps between meditation sessions, always remaining inseparable from samadhi. The Practice Lamp says: Meditation sessions are divided into three types: superior, intermediate, and inferior. When the body and mind are comfortable, the meditation session should be longer. When uncomfortable, divide it into four sessions. By becoming accustomed to long meditation sessions, one can become a yogi. Fifth, regarding enhancing the effectiveness of meditation, there are three types: The superior one enhances the effect through realization. Whatever good or bad, pleasant or painful feelings arise in appearances and consciousness, one does not modify them, but observes the essence of the appearances themselves. In this way, the awareness that clings to characteristics will naturally be liberated into a state of no birth, spontaneous non-cessation, and undifferentiated essence, and appearances and self-awareness will become virtuous friends. The intermediate one enriches daily activities through observation and meditation, and at appropriate times, uses the profound tantric teachings, the view of the generation stage, the path of skillful means, and tummo and other methods to enhance the effect, making both the sutras and tantras virtuous friends.
