Pa. Possessing the wisdom capable of comprehending the true and ultimate nature of reality. The characteristics of the pith instructions are: the methods for achieving this life through various means; the path of the Lesser Vehicle for attaining peace and happiness for oneself; the principle of traversing the paths and grounds over countless eons; surpassing all methods of the lower tantras that rely on effortful practices with signs, the mind of enlightenment, which is the essence of the unity of samsara and nirvana. This teaching guides one towards firmness through the stages of skillful means and practical application, revealing and realizing the Dharmakaya directly. Second, the stages of Samadhi are: As the root text states: 'The Samadhi that initially abides, the second is unmoving, the third transforms into equality, the fourth is spontaneously accomplished wisdom.' For example, just as a person gradually grows to completion, there are four stages: infancy, youth, middle age, and the attainment of ultimate strength in life and physical power. Similarly, as crops gradually grow, there are also four stages: sprouts, ears of grain, ripening fruit, and the completion of harvesting. Likewise, as beings progress through the paths and grounds with wisdom, there are also four yogas: the initial stage of making the mind workable through calm abiding practice; the second stage of unmoving insight and discernment; the third stage of the unity of calm abiding and insight, the state of equality; and the fourth stage of spontaneously accomplished wisdom, the culmination of the path. Among these, the initial stage of making the mind workable through calm abiding has four aspects: the method of settling into Samadhi, the analogy of the Samadhi that arises from it, its signs of warmth, the fruit, and the teaching of how to attain it. The initial method of settling is: Having abandoned the busyness of samsara, when abiding in a solitary place, before the gatherings of obstacles arise, abide as you have settled. Thus it is said. Initially, abandon adverse conditions and explain favorable conditions. The actual method of settling. In between, recognize and abandon the faults of Samadhi. Explain through the nature of the four Samadhis. What is to be abandoned is: in this life, desiring happiness, well-being, and wealth for oneself and one's relatives, engaging in the ten non-virtuous actions and other sins to subdue enemies, and engaging in business for profit, agriculture, and labor.

Therefore, one should abandon for the long term all activities, including crafts, astrology, medicine, and Bon, that are pursued for the sake of food, clothing, gain, honor, and fame, as these are all activities of the tumultuous and distracting samsara. What should be relied upon is: a monastic place far from villages, where there are no humans or non-humans, no fear of wild animals, where it is easy to obtain favorable conditions such as water and trees, a place that is pleasant and conducive to increasing virtuous deeds, and a lama who possesses qualities, and good Dharma friends who share the same values. Secondly, regarding the method of equipoise: The "Secret Lamp" says: "All sentient beings without exception, possess the nature of the heart of enlightenment. In order to realize that meaning, meditate on the four essentials to attain what has not been attained." Therefore, first, apply the seven-point posture for meditation, sit in the lotus position, straighten the spine, place the hands in the meditation mudra, spread the arms, slightly bend the neck, place the tongue against the palate, slightly separate the upper and lower teeth, leave a gap between the lips for air to flow, expand the abdomen, fix the eyes on the tip of the nose, and gaze straight ahead from the eyebrow center to the distance of an arm's reach without moving. The essential point of the object of focus is: fix the focus on a clear and radiant white "A" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: a, literal Chinese meaning: no), without wavering for even a moment. The essential point of controlling the breath is: at the beginning of each session, forcefully exhale impure air nine or three times, and then let the breath relax naturally. The essential point of holding the mind has two aspects: with focus and without focus. The first, with focus, is: fix the mind on that "A" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: a, literal Chinese meaning: no), without letting it wander elsewhere, and until a state of non-conceptual natural abiding arises, practice six sessions a day, etc., and occasionally purify the body and mind and meditate. The "Secret Lamp" says: "First, reside in a secluded place, like a vulture soaring in the sky, fix the mind on the object of focus, unite the breath and mind with diligence, rely on the various objects of focus, and the state of no-focus will arise." Secondly, regarding the method of focusing the mind on no-focus: it is divided into three parts. First, the essential points of body and speech are as before, and in terms of mind, do not think about the past, future, or present. Instead, concentrate the mind, eyes, and breath on the place of the previously focused "A" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: a, literal Chinese meaning: no), focusing single-mindedly without allowing the mind to wander even for a moment, and cut off any arising thoughts immediately.
