put into it. The Guhyadipa says: "The path of following earlier and later is mistaken. The present awareness is not artificial. Like an archer straightening an arrow shaft, focus your effort intensely." So it says. Secondly, when a thought arises that cannot be controlled, relax both body and mind. Do not worry about not generating meditation. Whatever good or bad thoughts arise, do not welcome or support them. Relax in your own place and remain there in relaxation. Manjushri Mitra says: "The method of remaining in that is not to gather body, speech, and mind, but to relax and remain at ease." So it says. Thirdly, having separately known movement and stillness, do not tighten or loosen both body and mind too much. Make it just comfortable. Whatever thoughts, good or bad, arise, do not fix or alter them. It is important to just leave them as they are and not let awareness wander elsewhere. The Guhyadipa says: "Awareness remains alone. This is the intention of the Tathagata." So it says. Thirdly, identifying and eliminating faults. Among the thirty faults and obscurations spoken of by the venerable Rinpoche, he spoke of six faults and sixteen obstacles that prevent the initial arising and subsequent increase of samadhi. Therein, the faults are of six kinds: Sudden arising of desire, great anger arising, pride, jealousy, mental confusion, and arrogant views are the six. Laziness, many activities, mental wandering, mental excitement, sadness, following thoughts, dullness, many thoughts, many hopes, many doubts, great desire, little diligence, fondness for sleep, recitation, reading, joking talk, and idle chatter are the sixteen obstacles. The wise should abandon these. Thus it is said, so one should recognize these faults and abandon them with mindfulness, awareness, and vigilance. Furthermore, all the faults of samadhi are included in sinking, dullness, excitement, and scattering. Sinking is when awareness is faint and one does not know what one has done. Dullness is when awareness is unclear and dark. Excitement is when the mind remains somewhat, but one remembers some confused thoughts. Scattering is when one forgets meditation and thoughts run wild. There are two ways to eliminate these:

Eliminating what arises from the power of meditation and what arises from conditions. The first is: if you are dull and drowsy during meditation, then sit in a high, cool place on a thin cushion, and with body and mind invigorated, make awareness clear and bright, and then meditate. Avoid nutritious food. If you are agitated and scattered, then sit in a warm, low, and dark place on a thick cushion. Relax your body and mind, lower your gaze, and then meditate. If there is nutritious food and good wine, take a little. The second is what arises from conditions: if you are overcome by previous obstacles or suddenly by bad objects of attachment and aversion, and drowsiness and agitation arise, then, as it says in the 'Clear Lamp': 'Under the control of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, when agitation and drowsiness arise, focus the mind on the outer, inner, and secret, and it will become peaceful.' Therefore, the outer is to think of the fear of samsara and the qualities of nirvana. The inner is to focus awareness on one point. The secret is to remember the view. So it says. Sometimes, if meditation is tiring, the body is stiff and rough, and you cannot sleep, then massage yourself. Eat nutritious food. Behave loosely. If you want to walk, your mind is distracted, and you feel dizzy, then lower your gaze. Tighten the lower wind. Exhale the stale air forcefully, and then relax the body. Place the heavy body on the ground, focus awareness on the navel chakra, and then meditate. As it says in the 'Lamp of Experience': 'All faults and remedies, etc., are determined by experience and constitution. Understand the tightening and loosening of faults and remedies from the oral instructions.' That is its meaning. Fourth, the nature of samadhi has five aspects: the order of how experiences arise, the nature of samadhi itself, the method of continuous practice, the duration of a session, and the enhancement of effects. Each of these also has three aspects. The ways of arising have three: wavering, attainment, and stability. The experience of wavering is: at first, when you meditate, more thoughts arise than before. You feel that meditation is not arising. This is because you have recognized the thoughts. As mentioned above, do not be controlled by faults, but relax and leave the thoughts on their own. Sometimes you feel that it exists, sometimes you feel vague, sometimes you feel peaceful, and sometimes thoughts arise like drinking tea. As it says in the 'Lamp of Experience': 'It is like a strong current at first, thoughts are many and stay for a short time.' Second, the experience of attainment is: the beginning, middle, and end of a session.
