For that meditation, expand the observation, without generating the thought of "what is this," but abide in the state of ease, clarity, and non-mentation. However you abide, observe the place of arising, the place of abiding, the place of going, the essence, the shape, the color of that abiding, what differences there are between the mind and experience of the meditator, and place it on yourself. In the "Experience Lamp" it says: "Unborn, self-born, there is no birth. In the nature of the unborn, without contrivance, self-born, relax and abide. Do not desire, without contrivance, abide." It is said like this. If you understand that meaning, then the method of restraint will appear below. Do not regard abiding as a merit, do not regard wavering as a fault, but recognize whatever conceptual wavering arises. Now, for the conceptualization of memory, the place of arising, the place of abiding, the place of going, the essence, the shape, the color, what is it like, what appears? What is the difference between the experience of ease, clarity, non-mentation, and wavering? Is it caused by causes and conditions? What is the difference between having or not having defilement? Observe what the essence of the mind is. Separate and observe, mix and observe. Whether wavering or abiding arises, abide on that and observe. In the "Secret Lamp" it says: "By meditating on calm abiding, insight arises. From conceptualization, wisdom arises. In emptiness, compassion arises." It is said like this. If you understand the meaning of the mind, then the second is, starting from the signs of heat, fire, smoke, mirage mentioned earlier, to the Buddha's pure lands, body images, etc., whatever good or bad appearances arise, mix the mind into that and abide there. For that experiential appearance, whether the place of arising, the place of abiding, the place of going, things, or tenets appear, observe whether it is the same as or different from the mind. In the "Secret Lamp" it says: "The wisdom of union does not depend on causes and conditions, but naturally manifests with the power of the meeting of minds." It is said like this. If you understand this meaning, then the third is, for all things that appear as objects, such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, the five poisons of afflictions, the feelings of pleasure and pain, and the hopes and fears for samsara and nirvana, etc., abide on everything that arises in the mind, and observe the essence, shape, color, place of arising, place of abiding, place of going, and what differences there are between the mind and mental factors. In the "Experience Lamp" it says: "The Dharmakaya is free from elaboration, clear self-awareness. The three bodies are self-perfected, effortlessly spontaneous. Like an uncreated person, relax the body and mind and abide as you please." It is said like this. Like this, you must cultivate the experience of whatever arises in the mind,

From the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: Desire, hatred, and delusion, if not moved by the winds of conceptual thought, are self-arisen wisdom. Even great self-arisen wisdom, if moved by the winds of conceptual thought, becomes desire, hatred, and delusion. Thus it is said. Secondly, recognizing faults and combining them with wisdom, the Holy One said: Revealing the faults of the unfavorable side, there are thirty-six deviations and obscurations. If we explain the five doubts of error, they are doubt of annihilation, doubt of permanence, doubt of distraction, doubt of sinking, and doubt of non-existence, these are the five. If we explain the ten great obscurations, they are immovability, clarity, pleasure, suffering, pain, the arising of knowledge in the mind, clairvoyance, manifesting miraculous powers of signs, clinging to this as the supreme and unsurpassed, arrogance of one's own view, and disparaging the views of others. These are the great obscurations. Holding clairvoyance as a sign is a demon, like drinking unbearable poison, it is a fault. Thus it is said. Therefore, for view and meditation, the five common stains cannot go deep, and for qualities, the ten kinds of arrogance cannot increase, making fifteen in total. The six faults explained in the first yoga, and the sixteen obstacles, become thirty-seven, but because the six faults, the ten obscurations, and considering the two arrogances of view as one, these thirty-six deviations and obscurations prevent the samadhi of the first yoga from arising and increasing, so they must be abandoned. Here, when it is realized that appearance and existence are mind, and that the nature of mind is the Dharmakaya, the six faults of deviation, the ten obscurations, the five doubts, and the sixteen obstacles, whatever arises, whether sinking, dullness, agitation, or scattering, place it upon itself and look at its essence. Therefore, all deviations and obscurations appear as nothing other than the unceasing power of awareness, and awareness itself is without foundation or root, transcending the extremes of fault and quality, so all faults appear as wisdom. The Protector said: Because all is realized as self, there is no place for suffering from afflictions. Because self is inconceivable, there is no creator of afflictions. Not cutting off afflictions, naturally, is the intention of the Buddha. Thus it is said. The Holy One himself also spoke of dispelling faults: Emptiness without seeing, not falling into annihilation. Reality without seeing, not falling into permanence. Not following thoughts, not falling into distraction. Without dullness, one will not fall into sinking. Self-awareness and wisdom are clearly present, therefore one will not fall into non-existence.
