Three times three, and two times three is nine, blow it away far away. Visualize the lama at the crown of the head and in the heart, and pray. Relax the body and mind, and in a relaxed state, whatever thoughts arise, look at them and release them loosely on top of them. When it arises again, release it as before. When it disappears and becomes emptiness, do not be happy or sad. Do not regard the arising of many thoughts as a fault. Do not hope that meditation will be successful, and do not fear that meditation will not be successful. Rest loosely on whatever arises. If you release too much, a non-conceptual state without thoughts, without any movement or memory, will arise. If you do not grasp it tightly with mindfulness and recognize it, you will not feel it yourself, and a latent thought like a puddle under the eaves will arise. Although it does not harm immediately, it will eventually swell and prevent meditation from being successful, so you must grasp it. The appearance of thoughts is the main activity and memory that can be recognized, so release and rest on it. Gradually, when thoughts become many, you will feel annoyed. You will think, "I cannot meditate," but it does not matter. The first experience is like water on a steep mountain. The Kagyu say that this is "one-pointedness distracted by the waves of thoughts," which refers to the time when one-pointedness is very weak. At this time, by cultivating patience and continuing, sometimes you will abide, and sometimes you will not abide, like a bird entering and exiting the water. Sometimes it is like staying on a stone for a moment. This is the way the second experience arises. Continuing again, after a while, sometimes you will be distracted, but most of the time you will abide. Like an old man, most of the time you are abiding. This is the way the third experience arises. Continuing again, after a while, like water in a pipe or ditch, it will flow imperceptibly. At this time, you also need to grasp mindfulness a little. This is the way the fourth experience arises. Continuing it, gradually, the mind will not be distracted to anywhere, and it will abide day and night, and even the desire for food, drink, and clothing will not arise. Without shaking, like a mountain, it lasts for weeks and months. If this becomes bad and excessive, it will go to the cessation of the Hearers. If it is good, you will obtain extreme pliancy of the body and obtain excellent shamatha and vipassana. This is the way the fifth experience arises. These are also mostly based on the majority of cases, depending on the channels, elements, and faculties of each individual.
