Regarding this view, how did that Jetsun practice? In the songs, it says: When practicing the natural state, do not practice with conceptual mind; when abiding in the natural state, do not adorn with artificiality; do not regard conceptual thoughts as faults, nor deliberately cultivate non-conceptual thought; let the mind rest in its own nature, and maintain alertness. If practice reaches the depths of shamatha, and a feeling arises, that is the union of shamatha and vipassana. Such a result will occur. This passage is easy to understand. Allow him to become accustomed to it in that way, and maintain the original state. What happens? The flow will become less and less, and the abiding of the mind will become more and more stable. If you want deep shamatha, continue to practice in that way. Coarse and subtle conceptual thoughts cease, entering into emptiness that is neither existent nor non-existent, clear and without concept, the body and mind do not feel their existence, and a blissful feeling arises that one cannot bear to be separated from that samadhi. Continuing to practice, one will develop the five eyes and the qualities of clairvoyance, which is called dhyana. If practice increases, one will attain the one-pointedness of mind in the four dhyanas and the four formless absorptions. Ultimately, one attains the nine successive abidings of samadhi. These nine samadhis are also found in non-Buddhist traditions, so they are a common path for both internal and external schools, but because conceptual thoughts are too strong and cannot be controlled, shamatha is needed. Therefore, through vipassana endowed with excellent shamatha, having understood how to abandon afflictions, (the sutras) say that one should first seek shamatha, and so on. Without vipassana, one cannot progress on the path through this (shamatha), so when one only gains a small amount of mental stability, or feels that it is good if conceptual thoughts do not arise, merely recognize that conceptual thought, and by looking at its own nature, it will disappear, and become one with abiding, this is the practice of the union of shamatha and vipassana. The Dagpo Kagyu call it "the hand slipping between the transitions of abiding." (This is) a practice fabricated by conceptual mind. Because it requires inseparable awareness of recognition, the Kagyu call it "emptiness-object-mindfulness." If you continue to practice this, object-mindfulness will become self-illuminating mindfulness. If you do not become distracted, this is also a key point, and in about a month you can see daytime visions. Gyalwa Godtsangpa said: Do not meditate on all appearances as empty, nor meditate on them as non-empty. When any appearance arises, if you grasp it with mindfulness, one month is enough, and the original state of non-elaboration will come.

In short, if you recognize the samadhi of the previous calm abiding, it is called the union of calm abiding and insight, or Mahamudra, or Dzogchen. The previous doha said: The movement of thoughts and discriminations is the door of abiding, and recognizing one's own nature is the key to practice. It is in accordance with this. For the middle and lower of these three types of people, if they do not understand that the spontaneous arising of discrimination is practice, then by looking at any arising discrimination, all that arises will disappear into emptiness. In the state of disappearance, one appears after another. Looking at it again, it disappears as before. Continue like this. The doha says: The mind without dwelling is the realm of emptiness, the appearance of various things is the door of awareness, for this naked clarity and emptiness without thought, abide in your own nature, and look at the dharmadhatu! You will reach the ultimate of insight. Let them do it like this. Here, Mitra Joki's teaching says: If you grasp anything that arises with awareness, awareness will naturally be liberated. Therefore, this is an easy but error-prone method. The common practice method for the three types of people, superior, middle, and inferior, is: The doha says: The unscattered mindfulness does not relax, the unadorned abiding does not fabricate, the thoughtless awareness does not speak, do not be contaminated by permanence and annihilation, let it be natural, and it will make the union of calm abiding and insight. Although it is easy to understand to say this, mindfulness is not scattered, so do not modify anything that arises. When it appears, do not think it exists, and when it disappears, do not cling to its non-existence. Do not retract the head of discrimination, but let it develop freely, just to recognize it. Dzogchen Semde says: From the original pure dharmadhatu nature, awareness suddenly arises, and the momentary thought is like finding a jewel from the bottom of the sea. Unmodified by anyone, uncreated, is the dharmakaya. Introduce it like this. Now, for the three types of inferior people, most do not believe in vipassana, and cannot truly generate calm abiding, sometimes agitated, sometimes scattered, so they cannot practice. Therefore, first complete the preliminaries, on a comfortable cushion, the superior person sits in the vajra posture, otherwise sit in the ordinary lotus posture. Keep the body upright, and make the hands equal. Open the shoulders slightly outward, bend the neck slightly, and touch the tongue to the upper palate. Look at the tip of the nose with both eyes, that is, the seven-point posture of Vairochana. From the left and right nostrils
