Examine whether the nature of the mind of the past and future is the same or not, and let them observe for three days or so. If they say that the two are not the same, let them observe carefully again. If they say they are the same, let them investigate the three places of arising, dwelling, and ceasing, recognize them, and then continue. If this is not done, or whatever kind of person it may be, it is very important to have an experienced lama discern according to their respective abilities. Now, to briefly discuss the method of guiding those of superior faculties, you yourself, as in the usual preliminary practice, do not focus single-mindedly on whatever thoughts arise, but meditate on your own. If you start to wander, then when thoughts suddenly arise, cut them off immediately, do not wander, do not allow any thoughts to arise, and focus your attention. At this city gate of the mind, hold onto a remedy knot, if it is tight, I am tight, if it is loose, I am loose, that is how it is. However, there has been a fault of having too many thoughts in the past, so try to eliminate thoughts as much as possible. Cut off the wavering coming and going. Just as an elephant is tamed, the mind becomes compact. If coming and going are stopped, it will naturally become slow. Having realized this, what Dharma do I need? And, not recognizing ordinary thoughts, Like this, this is the obvious elimination. As it is said, so try to eliminate thoughts as much as possible. If you cannot eliminate thoughts, say that you cannot meditate, and then scold yourself. Let them make efforts to the point of exhaustion for three days or so, and if they still cannot eliminate thoughts, then, now, whatever thoughts arise, do not stop, let it continue to expand continuously. Except for continuing as much as possible, do not allow a state without thoughts to appear even for a moment, let them continue. Do not let the mind rest for even a moment, let them continue through thinking, and do this for three days as before. In this way, if you cannot continue to let it continue, a state of non-conceptual abiding will arise, but a state of not being able to recognize what this is will also arise. Now, carefully observe whether these two states are the same or different, and then come, and in the end, a state of confusion will remain, not knowing how to grasp, neither the same nor different. After this happens, then search for the mind, as it says in "After the Past": First, search for the place of arising of the mind.

Having said that, let your own mind, from the very beginning when it was simultaneous with Samantabhadra, until now, wander in samsara. Experiencing all kinds of suffering, doing what must be done, thinking what must be thought, there must be a place where this originally arose, look for where it arose from. If it arose simultaneously with Samantabhadra, then what is the manner of its arising? Or did it arise before that, also look for whether it arose from the outside or from the inside? From above, below, in between, the four directions, the four intermediate directions, look for where it arose from, and have him search diligently. When you go to search like that, if you say that there is a vague thing that cannot be expressed in words, that's fine. If you say something else, because you haven't thoroughly understood it, you should repeatedly investigate. Now, where does this mind reside? Does it reside inside the body, or outside or in between? Likewise, look and have him diligently search for where it resides above, below, in the directions, and in the intermediate directions. If you say it's inside, look at where inside it is. If you say it's inside the heart, then since the heart has no holes, it should be there until the heart decays after death. But since a corpse has no mind, it's not like that, look again. If you say it's outside, then where is it outside, above, below, in the directions, and in the intermediate directions? What is its shape and color, have him look. If you say it's like this, explain in detail how it is not. If you say it doesn't exist at all, then have him look for the one who says it doesn't exist. If you say it's like this, explain in detail how it is not like that. Whatever you say, investigate its essence, and if you say there is something that cannot be determined, is vague, fleeting, and cannot be expressed at all, that's fine. Now, where does your own mind, which manifests and moves in various ways, ultimately go? If it goes, is there a goer? What is the place it goes to like, examine it in detail and have him go and look. If you say there is a place to go, have him investigate the manner of its existence. If you say there isn't, then doing good will lead to higher realms (fortunate realms), and doing evil will lead to lower realms (unfortunate realms). The mind is the goer, so what is the manner of going, and what is the goer itself like, look for it. In this way, go and look for the way the place to go and the goer exist, and if you say that you find something that vanishes and is nothing at all, that's right.
