Cutting Attachment to Worldly Concerns. It is necessary to be single-mindedly devoted to Dharma, without attachment to food, clothing, and talk, the Eight Worldly Dharmas, etc. As it is said: 'In a solitary place where death strikes like an arrow, the practitioner who has completely severed attachment, the one who has abandoned this life for retreat, the mind does not meet with people pursuing the Eight Worldly Dharmas.' Like that, one must practice like Gyalwa Yang Gonpa. To do that, one needs to receive instructions and meditate. The instructions are also of four types: word instructions for understanding the words, meaning instructions for understanding the meaning, experiential instructions for generating experience, and fruition instructions for reaching the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal, the fruit, is Buddhahood, so one must meditate until that is attained. To meditate on that, there are three points: First, taking the generation of Bodhicitta as the basis, one must strive in taking refuge. Visualizing the refuge field in the sky in front, thinking that oneself and all sentient beings are taking refuge, recite the refuge prayer a thousand or ten thousand times, etc. Finally, receive the four empowerments, visualize them dissolving into light and merging into oneself. In that state, whatever thoughts arise, neither suppress them nor chase after them, but let them naturally dissipate. Or, when a thought arises, deal with it as before. In short, whatever thoughts arise, leave them as they are, without introducing anything from elsewhere. Just relax in the state of recognizing the thought itself. Alternate between taking refuge and relaxing in this way, for three days, five days, or seven days, etc., adjusting according to need. Next is the instruction on the recitation and meditation of the Hundred Syllable Mantra to purify negative karma: Visualize Vajrasattva above the crown of the head, and the nectar flowing from his toes drives away all of one's negative karma, flowing down to the nine levels of the earth, the body filled with white nectar. Recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra a hundred times, etc., receive the four empowerments from Vajrasattva, visualize him dissolving into light and merging into oneself, then relax as before, observing the way of looking at thoughts and the duration of time as before. Third is the instruction on the Mandala offering for accumulating merit: In the sky in front, clearly visualize the Guru, Yidam, and Three Jewels as in the refuge taking, then offer the thirty-seven heaps Mandala, and the ground smeared with incense, etc., and the Mandala of medicine, the Mandala of grains, the Mandala of precious jewels, etc., external mundane substances.

Offer the mandala. The inner offering is the mandala of the Vajra body of ultimate meaning, the secret mandala of the mind of union, the very secret mandala of the three kayas, etc., offer as much as you know and are capable of. In between sessions, take the four empowerments, rest, and observe the thoughts as before. The number of days is also the same. Fourth, the instruction on the Guru Yoga that causes blessings to enter: On the crown of your head, on a lion throne and lotus moon seat, visualize the essence as the Guru who teaches this Dharma, in the form of Orgyen Yab-Yum, or Kuntuzangpo, or whatever you prefer. From his heart, rays of light radiate, inviting all your past Gurus, those with whom you have a Dharma connection and have established devotion, and all the Gurus who will appear until you attain enlightenment in the future. Merge them into him, and contemplate him as the essence of all Gurus combined. Again, rays of light radiate, inviting all the deities of the Yidam mandala, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, etc. Merge them into him, and contemplate him as the essence of all Yidams combined. Again, rays of light radiate, inviting all the Dakinis and Dharma protectors. Merge them into him, and contemplate him as the Guru, the all-encompassing wish-fulfilling jewel. Then, generate devotion until tears well up, and recite the Guru's praise, or if you don't have one, recite the concluding verses of a prayer like the Guru's Three Kayas prayer: Grant your blessings to realize the nature of primordial purity! Grant your blessings to recognize whatever arises as your own nature! Grant your blessings to dissolve deluded appearances in their own place! Grant your blessings to generate continuous samadhi! Grant your blessings to attain Buddhahood in this life! Recite this one hundred and eight times without distraction. Finally, receive the four empowerments from the Guru. The Guru dissolves into light and merges into you, and rest in equanimity as before. Finally, dedicate the merit. This Guru Yoga should be practiced during the preliminary practices for the number of days as before. From the main practice onwards, after the session's introduction and instruction, it is important to practice at all times without interruption, fixing a number of times. Even for someone who has not generated meditation in their mindstream, if they practice Guru Yoga five times a day without interruption, they will not need to practice transference of consciousness (phowa), as it will naturally occur on its own. This is what Gyalwa Godtsangpa said. If Guru Yoga is not practiced in connection with devotion, it is very difficult for meditation to arise.
