Grounds. Why is it called "ground"? The Ornament of the Sutras states: "Performing various virtuous deeds, Always dwelling in joy, The grounds of Bodhisattvas, Are considered to be the dwelling place." Like the great earth, it is the basis, place, or support of all qualities, hence it is called "ground." Or, from the same text: "Because of immeasurable fearless beings, Among those immeasurable ones, Because of possessing the ability to go further and further, Those themselves are considered grounds." It is said that the Sanskrit equivalent of "ground" is "bhaumi," to which the letter ཏུ was later added. According to the definition, "bhu" is "bhuta," meaning like the great elements, it is the support of the collection of qualities; "mi" is "amita," meaning it is obtained through immeasurable austerities; also, "bhu" is "abhaya," meaning after obtaining the ground, one is free from the five fears, etc.; and "bhu" is "bhuya," meaning by relying on the lower level and then going upwards, it becomes the support for progressing from higher to higher, hence it is called "ground." In short, like the earth, it is the support of qualities, hence it is called "ground," which is the general definition of "ground." Fourth: Divisions, birth as noble ones, ways of attainment, faith and entry, realization, four accomplishments, ways of accomplishment, non-accomplishment and accomplishment, much pride, little pride, and no pride. Grounds can be roughly divided into four: division by birth as noble ones, division by ways of attainment, division by ways of accomplishment, and division by pride. The first is divided into two: the ground of ordinary worldlings and the ground beyond the world. The characteristic of the first is that it becomes the support of the qualities of entering the Dharma of the noble ones. Examples are: this can also be divided into the ground of the first practitioner and the ground of practicing with faith. The first is from the awakening of the Mahayana lineage and the arising of the first Bodhicitta, up to the stage of the path of accumulation, because it is to mature one's own immature continuum. The latter is the stage of the path of preparation, because it is only generating faith in the meaning of emptiness. The characteristic of the second, the ground beyond the world, is that it becomes the support of the extraordinary qualities of the noble ones. Examples are the stages from the path of seeing to the path of ultimate completion, that is, the directly realized suchness in the first ground, the undefiled wisdom samadhi.

It is because one becomes accustomed to practice. Second, the distinction based on the method of attainment: The ground attained through faith, which engages primarily in faith in all dharmas; the ground attained through practice, which engages in the ten practices as desired; the ground attained through realization, which directly knows the nature of reality from the first ground onwards; and the ground attained through accomplishment, which, especially from the eighth ground onwards, engages effortlessly and spontaneously. Thus, there are four distinctions. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The attainment of the grounds is through engaging in faith and pure practice, and because of realization. The grounds are fourfold through the door of accomplishment." This is because it is said so. Third, the distinction based on the method of accomplishment: The ground practiced with faith during the stage of accumulation and preparation is unaccomplished; the ground of seeing and meditation is accomplished with pure intention; and within accomplishment, from the first to the seventh ground, it is unaccomplished in terms of having effort, while from the eighth ground onwards, it is accomplished because of the absence of effort. Thus, there are four distinctions. This is also from the same text: "All the grounds should be known as unaccomplished and accomplished. The accomplished are also considered unaccomplished and accomplished." This is to be known because it is said so. Fourth, the distinction based on pride: Among them, the ground practiced with faith has much pride; the seven impure grounds have little pride; and the three pure grounds have no pride. Thus, there are three distinctions. This is also from the same text: "Much pride, little pride, and also considered as without pride." This is because it is said so. Fifth, explaining the unique characteristics of the Mahayana grounds, there are six aspects: the nature of the designations, the etymology, the general characteristics, the increase, the practice, the individual, the three trainings and the aggregates, the purification and the abandonment and realization, the qualities, and the distinctions of birth. First: Joyful, Immaculate, Illuminating, Blazing, Difficult to Conquer, Manifest, Far-Reaching, Immovable, Good Intelligence, Cloud of Dharma. These are the names of the grounds from the first to the tenth. The etymology of these is: Because one sees the meaning of the nature of reality that was not seen before, one approaches the supreme enlightenment for one's own benefit, and seeing that the benefit of other sentient beings is greatly accomplished, one generates great joy. Therefore, the first ground is the Joyful Ground. Because it is free from the defilement of breaking vows and focusing on the Hinayana, the second ground is the Immaculate Ground.
