Bodhi The stages of the path. Possessing four great qualities, the root is to rely on a spiritual friend. Integrating the practices of the three systems of scripture, instructions, and oral teachings into one is the stages of the Bodhi path. In this, all teachings are included as being taught as a means to attain enlightenment directly and indirectly. The root of its practice does not go beyond the two aspects of Bodhicitta. Therefore, the order in which ordinary beings initially practice it, according to the Ornament for Clear Realization, integrates the oral instructions taught by the Hearers who seek peace, etc., into the stages of the path. The author of this instruction's treatise is none other than the Lord Jowo-je himself, the sole deity of the snowy lands. Although he composed many treatises, the root that completely embodies the entire path is the Lamp for the Bodhi Path. This treatise is said by the great scholars who uphold this tradition to possess four great qualities. That is, all the Buddha's scriptures, whether of the Great or Small Vehicle, are shown here as the path to enlightenment for one person, so it has the greatness of realizing that all teachings are without contradiction. Sutras, tantras, and their commentaries are all made into subjects of explanation. There is no need to seek the essential points of practice elsewhere, so there is no need to accumulate the karma of abandoning the Dharma. If one gains certainty in the essential points of this path, then all the scriptures will appear as oral instructions, which is its greatness. Relying on this sacred instruction, one can easily attain all the intentions of the Buddhas, which is its greatness. The bad idea that some of the Buddha's scriptures need to be studied and some do not is reversed by this treatise, because it teaches the means of attaining enlightenment directly and indirectly, so it is understood that all must be practiced, thereby causing great misdeeds to cease on their own, which is its greatness. Such a profound Dharma teaching is the order of entering the teachings, and it is also called the stages of the three types of individuals, the stages of the Bodhi path, and the entrance to the great chariot. Until enlightenment is attained, one must enter this great Dharma tradition. When entering and teaching this Dharma, first, one must properly rely on a qualified spiritual friend who is the root of all paths and the source of all happiness. The manner of this has been briefly mentioned above. Secondly, there are three parts: training in the stages of the path common to the small individual.

Learning the common stages of the path for intermediate beings. Learning the uncommon stages of the path for great beings. The first is: From leisure and fortune, impermanence, and the suffering of the lower realms, desiring to liberate oneself, taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Freely liberated from the eight worldly concerns, with pure faith. Meditating on the stages of the path for lesser beings. Having received instructions from a virtuous spiritual friend, at the beginning of meditating on the stages of the path, if a genuine desire to take the essence from leisure arises, it will urge practice from within. To generate that, meditate on the precious human body endowed with eight leisures and ten fortunes, considering how difficult it is to obtain through reasons, examples, and numbers. Then, if the mind that seeks this life does not turn away, a strong pursuit of the next life will not arise. Therefore, strive to meditate on the impermanence of the body not staying long, and the way of wandering in the lower realms after death. At that time, fearing the suffering of the lower realms, when a genuine mind of wanting to liberate oneself from it arises, from the depths of the heart, generate certainty in the qualities of the Three Jewels, the refuge that can protect from suffering, and abide in the common precepts of taking refuge. Previously, the pursuit of this life was genuine, while the pursuit of the next life was only in words, but now it has changed, mainly pursuing the next life, and the affairs of this life have become secondary. No longer being happy with gain and unhappy with loss, etc., freely liberated from the bonds of the eight worldly concerns. Purifying the initial faith, the stages of the path for lesser beings arise in the mindstream, that is, first it must be mixed and integrated into the mindstream, and meditated upon. The second is: Believing in karma and its effects, seeing the faults of samsara. With a genuine mind of wanting to abandon the afflictions that are the cause of samsara, seeking liberation, purifying renunciation. Meditating on the stages of the path for intermediate beings. Not being satisfied with just that, from many aspects, generate and stabilize faith in karma and its effects, which is the basis of all white dharmas. Strive to engage in virtue and avoid non-virtue, and constantly enter the path of the four powers. Then, repeatedly contemplate the general and specific faults of samsara, thereby seeing its faults. Recognize that the cause of the arising of samsara is affliction, and want to abandon it.
