is the absence of self. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "It is not permissible to grasp at a self; this self I have not taught to children." And as it says in the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra*: "Although the Blessed Ones diligently searched for self in all dharmas, that worldly self is only the size of a thumb." And so on, saying, "The self is like this," all the Buddhas and Śrāvakas have not found it, but after attaining enlightenment, they taught it to sentient beings. And so on. And as it says in the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: "The teaching of the Tathāgatagarbha is not the same as the self spoken of by the Tirthikas." And so on. One should not be attached to the self. The meaning of these statements is that the middle and final turnings of the wheel of Dharma are definitive in meaning, but temporarily they cut off elaboration, and ultimately they show the difference in the definitive meaning of the nature of reality. Second, there are five distinctions: the commonly accepted system, the system that speaks of no self-nature, the Yogācāra system, combining with the views of the noble ones, and refuting wrong conceptions of the provisional meaning and establishing it as one meaning. The first is: at first, everything agrees that it is provisional. The first turning of the wheel of Dharma is established from the point of view of the conventional truth being the most important, so it is mostly shown to be provisional in meaning, and all the Mahāyāna speakers agree on this. The second is: the middle is definitive, the last is provisional. Those who speak of no self-nature say that the middle turning of the wheel of Dharma is definitive, and the last is shown to be mostly provisional in meaning. There is no actual scriptural source that clearly explains this from the sutras, but it is established by reasoning based on general scriptures that distinguish between definitive and provisional meanings. The third is: the middle is the provisional meaning of cutting off elaboration, the last is the ultimate definitive meaning of establishing the ultimate. The Yogācāra system says that the middle turning of the wheel of Dharma is the provisional meaning of cutting off elaboration, and the last is the ultimate definitive meaning of establishing the ultimate. There is a scriptural source that the Victorious One himself revealed, and there is also the system of the noble ones of the third ground who prophesied that they would distinguish it. The meaning is combined with reasoning such as the analogy of polishing a jewel. Rangjung Dorje, Drimé Özer, and others mainly accept the latter, while others accept the former. The middle turning of the wheel of Dharma is temporary because it cuts off the elaboration of clinging to extremes in the view.
