The term "three" refers to something like the root or nature of gold, and the three forms of transformation. Just as there is no difference between the gold and the forms in the three forms of gold, there is also no difference between self-awareness and the three appearances in this context. If we differentiate them from the perspective of not distinguishing between the real and the imputed, then there are the three appearances of the ultimate reality and the three appearances of the relative dependent origination. The first of these is: the root, the dharmadhatu, the self-mind, the great bliss, the unchanging ultimate self-awareness, and the way in which the self-nature of that great bliss itself manifests its own form. The secrets of body, speech, and mind are inconceivable, and in sequence are appearance, increase, attainment, and the all-pervading great bliss, which is the emptiness and luminosity of all things. These three are also inseparable equality, the nature of the primordial ground, the fruit to be attained, the goal of the path of meditation, and pervade all the dharmas of the three paths of samsara and nirvana. However, its own nature transcends the three of ground, path, and fruit. This is not the actual three appearances, but because it is its nature, it is called the three appearances. The second has the names three appearances, three wisdoms, and three consciousnesses. If divided, there are two types: the three appearances with self-nature and the three appearances without self-nature. The non-self-nature also means the non-afflictive conceptualization. If the first is divided, there are the three appearances of the ground phase and the three appearances of the path phase. If the ground phase is divided, there are the three constant appearances and the three appearances that occur at special times. The first of these is: The three appearances of the nature of reality mentioned earlier, when existing in a way that pervades all sentient beings, arise from the minds of each sentient being like its rust. That is, there is a habitual tendency to crave happiness, a capacity to make the mind cling to objects, and the three forms of its transformation, that is, the manifestation of body, speech, and mind. The mind's self-awareness, which has the ability to manifest, is in sequence the three of appearance, increase, and attainment. All three are only the relative self-awareness and the inward-looking aspect. These three appearances are said in other tantras to be the seeds of changing bliss and leaking bliss. The essence of all three is the alaya.

Although it is the nature of the mind's own nature, at this time, appearance acts as the cause for the arising of consciousness and root consciousness, and increase acts as the cause for the arising of afflicted mind, so it is established there. Obtaining is from the opposite aspect of obtaining, except for establishing the self-nature of the alaya and arising through indirect means, it does not actually give rise to those seven consciousnesses, so it is only established as the alaya. Therefore, the three appearances are taught as mind, intellect, and consciousness. Such three appearances are inseparable in essence and blended into one, and continue to flow without ceasing until the end of samsara, so they are called the three root appearances. Secondly, there are four types based on the time of occurrence: the most coarse and clear occurrence is at the time of death; the intermediate occurrence is at the time of sleep and sexual intercourse; the subtle and unclear occurrence is at the time of all appearances of the six aggregates, that is, all moments of appearing as intellect. Among them, at the time of death, the twenty-five coarse elements are completely dissolved beforehand, which includes the five signs such as mirages. Wind dissolves into appearance, therefore the wisdom of the white path appearance associated with the inner white essence; its dissolution into increase, therefore the wisdom of the red path increase associated with the red essence; when it dissolves into obtaining, the power of white and red also disappears into the dharmadhatu, leaving only the part of the life force that controls it, therefore the wisdom of the black path obtaining arises. This is also the dissolution of the three appearances relative to the time difference of death, but not the dissolution of the three root appearances. Because at this time the mind is naturally luminous, pervaded by the alaya consciousness, and due to the cause of the dissolution of the appearance of objects, the alaya appears as the aspect of bliss and clarity. From this, the reverse-order three appearances arise in each subtle moment, thus forming the bardo. The three appearances during sleep, because at this time the three channels, essences, and winds of the dependent body are not separated from the dependent mind, so only a small part of the coarse and subtle parts dissolve, but not completely. In this, at the base stage, the progressive appearance, increase, and obtaining are very subtle and difficult to perceive. If a dream occurs, it arises from the subtle reverse-order three appearances, and when waking up from the attachment of the dream, it is again the reverse-order
