The subsequent arising of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the four immeasurables, because they converge on the path of liberation from suffering. As it is said, this school also has the distinction of being immeasurable. As stated in the Earth Store Sutra: Relying on sentient beings and the nature of phenomena, the four immeasurables with and without focus arise. As it is said, having understood the difference between having a focus and not having a focus, one should train in the object of focus and the object of only the immeasurable. These arise from four conditions: the lineage or element that exists in its own nature is the causal condition; the virtuous friend who teaches the teachings of the four immeasurables is the dominant condition; the manifestation of their respective objects is the objective condition; the benefit of cultivating the four immeasurables, the faults of not cultivating them, and the previous habituation are the immediately preceding condition. Due to the difference in the object of focus, the manner of arising is explained in three ways: those who are the first practitioners who have not realized selflessness focus on sentient beings; those who have realized half or two halves and have entered into practice focus on the Dharma; those who have realized both and have attained forbearance generate the four immeasurables in a way that is without focus. These are also as stated in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: Focusing on sentient beings is common to the heretics; focusing on the Dharma is common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas; being without focus is not common to all of them. Second: abiding in discipline, closing the doors of the senses, knowing the measure of food, striving in yoga day and night, abiding with mindfulness, generating joy and unregretful delight, the seven noble riches and the ten practices of Dharma, with faith and other virtuous causes of liberation as preliminaries, from the first entry into the Great Vehicle's path of accumulation up to the time when the path of preparation has not arisen, the first practitioners, motivated by the desire for perfect enlightenment, abide in pure discipline, close the doors of the senses, know the measure of food, do not sleep day and night but strive in yoga, abide with mindfulness in actions of what should be taken and what should be abandoned, generate joy, do not regret virtuous deeds and are very delighted, and are in a state of

Having faith and pure discipline, being widely learned and accustomed to giving, knowing shame by looking at others, and being extremely cautious by looking at oneself, possessing perfect wisdom and the seven noble riches. Like this and so on. In the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," it says: writing letters, making offerings, giving, listening, reading, receiving, explaining, reciting, and contemplating and meditating on them, the nature of these ten practices is an immeasurable accumulation of merit. As the practice of these ten dharmas is mentioned in the writings of Situ Rinpoche Chokyi Gyaltsen. Furthermore, accumulating other virtues, such as faith, that become the cause of liberation, without partiality, as a preliminary, one should engage in the practice of the actual stages of the path. Third, regarding the actual content of the stages to be practiced, there are three points: generally, the stages of training the mind; specifically, the methods of shamatha and vipassana; and summarizing by briefly mentioning the four preparations. The first point is: train the mind through the four seals and the five factors of liberation, recollection of the king and so on, nine impure perceptions, eight great thoughts of a great person, and purifying the field of activity. In the path of accumulation, in general, one should practice the view, such as the four seals. Among them, the method of practicing the four seals is to generate bodhicitta and then meditate on all conditioned phenomena being impermanent, the nature of samsara with defilements being suffering, all phenomena being without self, and nirvana being peaceful, and then dedicate the merit. Similarly, practice the five factors of liberation, such as impermanence, and the recollection of the king and so on, that is, recollecting the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, discipline, generosity, body, death, birth, and breathing in and out. Also, the nine impure perceptions of the body, such as the corpse appearing swollen, worm-eaten, blood-red, bluish, black, eaten, scattered, burned, and rotten. And thinking, when will I be able to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings, when will I be able to place sentient beings threatened by poverty in great wealth, when will I be able to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings with this body of flesh and blood, when will I be able to even stay in hell for a long time, for the sake of sentient beings
