The temporary mental activities of entering, such as focusing, give rise to the nine stages of abiding in the mind. The six powers to rely on for generating them are: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarity. The first of these six accomplishes the first stage of abiding in the mind, the second accomplishes the second stage, the third accomplishes the third and fourth stages of abiding in the mind, the fourth accomplishes the fifth and sixth stages, the fifth accomplishes the seventh and eighth stages, and the sixth accomplishes the ninth stage. The four temporary mental activities for these are: applying effort to enter, entering intermittently, entering without interruption, and entering spontaneously. Among these, the first mental activity is used to enter during the first and second stages of abiding in the mind, the second is used from the third to the seventh stages, the third is used during the eighth stage, and the fourth is used to enter in the manner of the ninth stage, hence it is called the temporary nature of the four mental activities. The nine stages of abiding in the mind that arise from these are: placing, continuously placing, and so on. Among these, placing the mind is to gather the mind from external objects and direct it inward to the object of focus. Continuously placing is to continuously place the mind that was initially directed, without wandering elsewhere, on that object of focus. Replacing is to recognize when the mind wanders outward and then return it to the same object of focus. Closely placing is to repeatedly gather the mind, which is naturally vast, and make it subtle before placing it. Taming is to think of the qualities of samadhi and rejoice in it. Pacifying is to regard distraction as a fault and pacify the mind that is not pleased with samadhi. Completely pacifying is to pacify attachment and displeasure, and so on. Making it one-pointed is to strive for effortless entry. Equanimity is to let go when the mind has become equal, thus the nine stages of abiding in the mind are fully developed. Among these, the nine stages of abiding in the mind are taught in the Ornament of Sutras, and the six powers and four mental activities are explained in the Hearer's Ground. Second, explaining the system of the pith instructions: In the system of pith instructions, movement, attainment, familiarity, stability, and completion, the five experiences are known by illustrating with examples. In the system of the pith instruction masters, the experiences of how calm abiding arises are condensed into five types. The first is the experience of the mind moving.

Like a waterfall from a steep cliff. Second, the experience gained is like a rushing river in a canyon. Third, the experience of habituation is like a slowly flowing river. Fourth, the stable experience is like a calm, waveless ocean. Fifth, the experience of stability reaching its ultimate perfection is unshakable no matter what happens, like a bright lamp undisturbed by the wind. By giving separate examples, the meaning of the experience can be understood. Third, regarding the explanation of the achievements obtained through meditation, there are two parts: the way to achieve tranquility (shamatha) along with the signs of mindfulness; and explaining the necessity of achieving it. The first part is: the complete achievement of physical and mental pliancy, which is the achievement of tranquility. Bliss, clarity, signlessness, non-discrimination merge with space. If one has not attained complete pliancy of body and mind, even if one has achieved the fourth mindfulness and the ninth stage of mind-abiding, it is not the ultimate tranquility. As it says in the *Sandhinirmocana Sutra*: "World Honored One, when a Bodhisattva focuses his mind on the mind within the mind, until he has not attained pliancy of body and mind, what is it called when he focuses his mind on the mind during that time? Maitreya, it is not tranquility, it should be said that it abides in accordance with an aspiration similar to tranquility." Also, as it says in the *Ornament of Realization*: "Because of its habituation, it no longer scatters, then the body and mind, having obtained great pliancy, and together with mindfulness." The mindfulness mentioned here is tranquility. In short, tranquility refers to the pliancy of body and mind, which makes them serviceable. Therefore, the samadhi before attaining that is categorized as belonging to the desire realm and is called one-pointedness of desire, not true tranquility. Regarding pliancy, the *Compendium of Abhidharma* says: "What is pliancy? Answer: In order to cut off the continuum of the bad states of body and mind, the very serviceability of body and mind, which has the function of eliminating all obscurations." The bad states of body and mind refer to the inability to use body and mind for virtuous deeds as desired. The antidote to that, which is the pliancy of body and mind, is that because it is free from the two bad states, body and mind become very serviceable and can be used for virtuous deeds. Furthermore, regarding the physical bad states that obstruct abandonment, when striving to abandon afflictions, the body is heavy and unusable, free from these states, and as light as cotton.
