Having a pure discipline free from faults, and contemplating that desires will turn this life and future lives into many faults, thereby completely abandoning the discriminations about them. Furthermore, the favorable conditions or branches of tranquility and its opposing factors should also be well relied upon as stated by Jowo (Atisha) in the 'Collection of Concentrations'. Second, classifying its order: These are encompassed by desire mind, thought, form, and cessation. If tranquility is divided from the perspective of basis or lineage, it can be divided into four: encompassed by the desire realm mind, encompassed by the realm of meditative concentration, encompassed by the formless absorption, and encompassed by the cessation absorption. The individual circumstances can be understood from the explanations above and below. Third, how to meditate on tranquility itself has three aspects: establishing the essential points of the body, showing the method of settling the mind, and recognizing the experiences that arise from it. The first is: The method of meditation is to abide in comfort, possessing the eight qualities of the body. At the beginning of meditating on tranquility, the essential points of the body are very important. Therefore, one should abide on a comfortable seat and make the body's conduct possess eight qualities. That is: legs in full or half lotus posture, eyes half-closed, gaze fixed on the tip of the nose, body upright, shoulders level, nose kept within the range of sight, a slight gap between the teeth and lips, tongue touching the palate, breath released naturally without effort. These are explained in the 'Stages of Meditation'. Second, showing the method of settling the mind has two parts: general characteristics of the object and specific stages of meditation. The first is: In general, the object is all-pervasive and purifies behavior. The wise and the afflicted purify four, adapting to the individual. In general, the Bhagavan declared four objects for yogis. The object of all-pervasiveness is: non-examining abiding and examining object, two. And achieving transformation through meditating on the limit and meaning of things as they are and as they appear is the accomplishment of the goal, that is, four. The object of purifying behavior is: the antidote to excessive behavior in the previous life, namely attachment, hatred, ignorance, pride, and conceptualization, respectively. The five objects are: the repulsive, love, interdependence, element analysis, and meditation on exhaling and inhaling.

As for the objects of focus for the learned, there are five kinds of expertise: the five aggregates, the twelve sources, the eighteen elements, the twelve links of dependent origination, and what is and is not possible. As for the objects of focus for purifying afflictions, there are sixteen, such as the peace and roughness of the upper and lower realms, and the impermanence of the four truths, making two. Among these, what kind of person should focus on what? If it is a person who is more inclined to desire, up to one who is more inclined to conceptual thought, then one must take the unattractive to the exhalation and inhalation as the definite support for focus, respectively. If it is a person who practices equally and has few afflictions, then it is enough to hold the mind on any of the above objects of focus, that is, according to the faculties. Secondly, there are three ways to explain the actual stages of meditation in detail: placing on a support, placing without a support, and placing on the nature itself. The first is: The method of placing distinctions is impure with support. Among the methods of placing distinctions, the most important at the beginning is to learn to place on a support. The impure is to place small physical objects such as wood chips and pebbles as supports for holding the mind, and the pure is to place statues of the Buddha, etc., images, writings, letters, hand gestures, etc., in a way that is neither too tight nor too loose, just right, like a Brahmin spinning thread. The second is the way to place without a support: Without support, from part to completion, place on the outer and inner body and what depends on the body. Having grasped the essence of staying on a support, make the unsupported body, etc., the object of the mind. First, holding the mind on each part such as the face and hands is called the support of the part. Having become accustomed to this, holding the mind on the general aspect of the fully complete body is called the support of completion. The classification and collection of these earlier and later ones are from the Samadhi Collection of the teacher Jangchub Zangpo. Calming the mind is divided into two: focusing on looking outward and attaining by looking inward. Looking outward is divided into two: special and ordinary. The former has two: body and letters. Looking inward is divided into two: focusing on the body and placing on what depends on the body. Focusing on the body has three: focusing on the body itself as a deity, hand gestures, skeletons, etc. Depending on the body has five: breath, subtle signs, bindu, rays of light, and focusing on joy and bliss. Although various kinds of focusing on other things are mentioned, they are all included in the two: with support and without support.
