When distraction towards external objects is pacified, and one delights in constantly entering the internal object of focus by its own nature, and abiding in a mind that is extremely tamed and possessed of qualities, this is called Śamatha (calm abiding). When focusing on that very Śamatha, whatever analyzes that very thing is Vipaśyanā (insight), as it is said. Secondly, the etymology is that from pacifying distraction, one abides excellently. The special characteristic is seen with the eye of wisdom. The meaning of the word or etymology is from the sound of "Śamatha." "Śama" means peaceful, and "tha" means abiding, meaning that after pacifying the mind's distraction caused by objects such as forms, the meditation that is cultivated, the mind abides excellently in one-pointedness, hence it is called Śamatha. And "Vipaśyanā" comes from "Viśeṣa Paśya," "Viśeṣa" means special or superior, and "Paśya" means seeing or viewing, meaning that the special characteristics of the nature of things are seen with the eye of wisdom, hence it is called Vipaśyanā. Thirdly, like a clear lamp that is not moved by the wind, when both are combined, one realizes the nature of reality itself. If one wonders why both Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are needed, since one alone is not sufficient, for example, if one possesses both a wind that does not move and a clear lamp, one can see things clearly, but even if it is clear, if it is moved by the wind, one cannot see. Similarly, if one possesses both the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of reality without error, and the meditation that allows the mind to abide as desired on the object of focus, one will clearly see reality. Even if there is unwavering meditation, if there is no wisdom to realize the nature of reality, it is impossible to realize the nature of reality. Even if one has the view of realizing selflessness, if one does not have the samādhi of the mind abiding in one-pointedness, it is impossible to clearly see the meaning of reality. Therefore, considering that the combination of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā leads to the realization of reality itself, the method of combining the two is taught in all the sutras and tantras. Fourthly, the order is that they abide in the manner of a support and what is supported. The order of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā is also like oil and a lamp, abiding in the manner of a support and what is supported. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "By the Vipaśyanā that is fully endowed with Śamatha, one knows that afflictions are completely destroyed, therefore, one should first seek Śamatha." As it is said, one first cultivates Śamatha, and then relies on it to cultivate Vipaśyanā. The reason for this is

I, Vipashyana, see the reality of the mind as it is by looking with the wisdom of discernment. To see in this way, it is also necessary to rely on Shamatha beforehand, so that the mind to be observed is workable, and therefore it is essential to have a self-sufficient independence. Fifth, there are two ways to explain the method of learning individual meanings: explaining individual meanings in detail and summarizing common categories. The first has three parts: Shamatha, Vipashyana, and the method of learning the union. The first has four parts: relying on the causes and conditions of Shamatha, the order of Shamatha, how to meditate on it, and the benefits of accomplishing it through meditation. The first is: Relying on the accumulation of Shamatha, abandoning all unfavorable aspects, relying on favorable places to live, having few desires, being content, etc., having pure morality, and abandoning distraction and conceptualization. Therefore, for those who wish to accomplish Shamatha, it is extremely important to rely on its causes or accumulations. As Jowo's "Lamp on the Path" says: "If the limbs of Shamatha are deficient, even if one strives to meditate diligently, even after thousands of millions of years, Samadhi will not be accomplished. Therefore, in the chapter on the accumulation of Samadhi, it is said: 'The limbs that are spoken of should be well established. On any object of focus, the mind should be placed virtuously. If the yoga of Shamatha is accomplished, then even clairvoyance will be accomplished.'" It is said. What are the accumulations? The Middle Volume of the Stages of Meditation says: "Living in a favorable place, having few desires, being content, completely abandoning many activities, having pure morality, abandoning distraction such as desire, and abandoning all conceptualization." It is said. That is, as the Ornament of the Sutras says: "Wherever the wise one practices, a good place and a good dwelling are found, a good land and good companions, possessing the equipment for the bliss of yoga." As it is said, it is good to obtain easily because food and clothing are easy to obtain, the dwelling is good because there is no harm from thieves, the land is good because it does not cause disease, companions are good because their views and practices are the same, and it possesses the equipment for bliss because there is no crowd of people and thorns of sound, etc., living in a favorable place, having few desires for good food and clothing, being content with only meager food, completely abandoning many activities such as buying and selling, and both the Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows.
