End. Third, abiding in self-nature: The waves of thought merge into the ocean of Alaya consciousness, striving to cultivate the samadhi of self-nature. Once familiar, one does not remember any object of focus, and all actions of subject and object are placed in stillness. In this way, all the rising and falling waves of conceptualization merge into the ocean of Alaya consciousness. At this time, the samadhi of self-nature is the ultimate of stillness, so one should strive for it. Third, recognizing the experiences arising from this, divided into two: briefly indicating by way of connection, and explaining the meaning of each in detail. First: The recognition of experiences arising from them is twofold, with support and without support. The way of recognizing the arising of experiences arising from those stillnesses of self-nature is twofold. The second is divided into two: the school of the scriptures and the school of pith instructions. The first is divided into two: relying on the eight antidotes to abandon the five faults, and the way of accomplishing the nine stages of mind abiding with the four mental engagements by means of the six powers. First: As the scriptures say, laziness of three kinds, forgetting instructions, sinking and excitement each two, non-application and application, these are the eight antidotes to the five faults. Aspiration, effort, faith, and pliancy are the initial preventions; non-forgetfulness, samadhi possessing three distinctions; awareness, effort, and equanimity, abandoning when entering. According to the explanations of the great treatises, for the obstacles to the arising of experiences, it is necessary to cultivate eight antidotes to counteract the five faults. As stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "Abiding therein, the state of being workable, all meanings are accomplished, the five faults are abandoned, arising from the cause of the eight antidotes. Laziness and instructions, forgetting and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are established as the five faults. Abiding and abiding therein, cause and effect as well, not forgetting the object, sinking and excitement and conceptualization, abandoning their manifestation, entering reality in stillness." As it is said, abiding therein is to generate diligence in order to eliminate unfavorable factors, abiding therein, from which arises the samadhi of mental workability. That is also the meaning of all the superknowledges, etc.

Since it is the foot or place of accomplishment of miraculous powers, it brings about the attainment of all things. Such samadhi arises from the cause of abandoning the five faults and cultivating the eight applications of mind. The five faults are: during the time of practice, laziness is a fault, because one does not engage in samadhi. It has three types: drowsiness such as sleep; attachment to evil deeds; and laziness. When diligently practicing samadhi, forgetting the instructions is a fault, because if one forgets the object of focus, one cannot keep the mind steady. When keeping the mind steady, sinking and excitement are obstacles, because these two make the mind unfit for practice. These also have two types: in terms of sinking, the coarse aspect is the loss of clarity in the object of focus, resulting in a dullness where the object is not clear; the subtle aspect is having clarity, but the strength of the grasping is weak. In terms of excitement, the coarse aspect is being too attached to objects, so that even antidotes cannot subdue it; the subtle aspect is not remaining without wavering, but being slightly distracted. When sinking and excitement arise, do not apply effort, because that will not pacify them. When free from sinking and excitement, apply effort, because that will not allow one to remain in equanimity. Here, if sinking and excitement are combined into one, there are five; if separated, it is said in the Stages of Meditation that there are six. The antidote to abandoning these is to cultivate the eight applications of mind, which are: aspiration, effort, the faith that is the cause, and the extreme pliancy brought about by its result. These four prevent the first fault, laziness. The antidote to forgetting is the samadhi that does not forget the instructions, which has three special qualities: the mind has a very clear sharpness; it has non-conceptuality that focuses single-pointedly on the object; and it experiences the bliss of feeling pacified from that. Examine whether sinking and excitement have arisen, and if they have, strive to eliminate them through the object of focus, the way of looking, behavior, etc. For the antidotes to sinking and excitement, etc., apply the mind of effort to what is not applied; when entering samadhi without fault, if applying effort, one should train in the equanimity of non-application. The second is: the power of hearing, thinking, mindfulness, wisdom, diligence, and familiarity. With these six, (one can achieve) firmness, non-regression, and non-interruption. Spontaneously accomplished.
