It should be done like this, and it should be repeatedly thought about, measured, and understood. If the Dharma is forgotten and only a single mind-training is studied, that is not helpful. For the best practitioners, there are the best teachers; for the intermediate practitioners, there are intermediate teachers. What is needed is that the more one practices, the deeper one's understanding of the Dharma becomes. If, after thinking in this way, one gains firm conviction, then when a bad friend says, "All thoughts of good and non-good are conceptual thoughts, so they should be abandoned," one thinks, "The Dharma does not say this, and virtuous friends would not think this way either," and thus does not listen to his words. If this is not the case, then faith is only a little bit, and for those without wisdom, they feel like crying when they see someone crying, and they feel like laughing when they see someone laughing. Like a stream of water, they think whatever others say is true, and then they are led by the nose. This is the explanation of the fourth stage of the "Four Reversals of Mind." The commentary on the seventh topic, the graduated divisions of the training in higher wisdom, from the treatise "Collected from All Entrances to the Vehicles, the Treasury of Precious Teachings, the Treatise Well Explaining the Three Trainings, Called All-Encompassing Knowledge," is completed. Thus, when the wisdom arising from thought has cut through the imputation and defamation of the general and specific characteristics of phenomena and the profound view, and certainty has been attained, it is necessary to tame the mind through meditation and to put it into practice. Therefore, the eighth topic, the graduated divisions of the training in higher concentration, has four sections: teaching the stages of meditation on calm abiding and insight, the common basis of all concentrations; teaching the stages of meditation on the causal vehicle in detail; teaching in general the stages of meditation on the secret mantra vajra vehicle, which primarily emphasizes the tantras; and teaching in detail the stages of meditation that primarily emphasize the instructions. The first section has three points: the benefits of meditating on concentration; identifying the concentration to be meditated on; and explaining it in detail. The first point is: The meaning of hearing and thinking is experienced through meditation, just as a farmer must eat even if he has a good harvest. Likewise, the meaning of generating the wisdom of hearing and thinking must be experienced through meditation that turns inward. If one is separated from meditation, no matter how profound one's hearing and thinking may be, one will not be liberated from bondage, just as a farmer, even if he has a good harvest, cannot relieve hunger if he does not eat it, so it is necessary to eat it.

Just as no matter how knowledgeable and thoughtful one is, they cannot eliminate the pain of illness, so one must rely on the application of medicine. Second, the key to the ocean of Samadhi in the Great and Small Vehicles is to seek the definitive understanding of both Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. In this regard, the *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes* states: All the various Samādhis taught by the Blessed One for the Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas should be understood as being encompassed by Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Therefore, since all the Samādhis of the Great and Small Vehicles are said to be encompassed by Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, those who seek Samādhi cannot exhaust the endless classifications. Thus, the common key to all the oceans of Samādhi is these two, Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, so one should first seek their definitive understanding. If one wonders what the need for this is, all the worldly and transworldly qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles are the fruits of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, as stated in the *Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes*: As Maitreya said: Whatever virtuous Dharma, whether worldly or transworldly, of the Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, or Tathāgatas, should be understood as the fruit of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Third, explaining this in detail, there are five points: the essence, the reason why both definition and need are necessary, the order, and the way to learn the meaning of each. The first is: Their essence is single-pointedness of mind and, the discriminating awareness that distinguishes phenomena. Their essence is: single-pointedness of mind based on a correct object of focus is Śamatha, and the wisdom that distinguishes phenomena, individually examining reality, is the essence of Vipaśyanā. The *Ratnamegha Sutra* states: Śamatha is simply single-pointedness of mind. Vipaśyanā is individual examination. And in its commentary, Vasubandhu says: Relying on correct Samādhi, in order to settle the mind on the mind, and in order to distinguish phenomena, one should understand Śamatha and Vipaśyanā in order. Without Samādhi, it is not possible; this is the characteristic of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. And the *Stages of Meditation* states: External
