thinking of separating. The order of meditation is: first, friends, then neutrals, then enemies, and then meditate on all sentient beings in the ten directions. Thus, equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion, separating the objects for each, meditating in order, this is following the Sutra of the Dharma Collection, made by the teacher Kamalashila, and the key points are very profound. The way to meditate is to think about how those sentient beings who have been mothers have fallen into samsara and experienced suffering in general and individually. The measure of the arising of compassion is: In the first part of the Stages of Meditation, it says: When the mind arises with compassion in the form of wanting to completely eliminate suffering for all sentient beings, just as one would feel when one's beloved child is uncomfortable, and it arises naturally and equally as one would treat oneself, then, that is complete, and therefore one obtains the name of great compassion. It is said, and from this one can also know the measure of the arising of great loving-kindness. The superior intention is: After meditating on loving-kindness and compassion in that way, alas! These sentient beings who are dear and beloved to me, being so lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering, how will these beings meet with happiness, and how will they be liberated from suffering? Thinking in this way, taking on the burden of liberating them, even if only with words, one must tame one's mind, and wishing to place them not only in temporary happiness, the heavenly realms and temporary liberation, but only in the great Bodhi, not separating from this thought, is the particularly excellent superior intention. Moreover, the noble ones of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers also do not turn back in samsara, and their minds naturally abide in non-proliferation, and they also possess many qualities, which is unimaginably great compared to us ordinary beings, but if compared with the way the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas purify the two obscurations, and the way the wisdom of knowing reality as it is and as many as there are increases, and the way they possess infinite qualities, and the immeasurable power of compassion and the power of miraculous abilities, and the way they engage in activities that benefit sentient beings at all times and in all directions, the liberation of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers seems very small, like Mount Meru and

The merit of compassion is also particularly great. Therefore, one should completely perfect the abandonment of self-interest and all realizations, attain the supreme and complete enlightenment of liberation, which is the nature of inexhaustible activity for the benefit of others. One should constantly think, "How can I attain Buddhahood?" and thereby turn one's mind away from inferior peace. Fourth, turning the mind away from grasping and the grasped: The meaning of all dharmas being without inherent existence, contemplate and analyze with discriminating awareness, causing the mind to turn away from grasping and the grasped. The nature of all defiled and purified dharmas is unborn from the very beginning. By repeatedly contemplating and analyzing this with the wisdom of discriminating awareness, transcendent wisdom arises from it, and the mind turns away from all the illusions of grasping and the grasped that appear in this way. Its objects, such as the two truths, have already been mentioned above. And for the subject, discriminating awareness itself, it is very important to generate wisdom born of thought. As it says in the chapter of 'Light Protector': 'Light Protector, just as two pieces of wood rubbed together by the wind produce fire, and after the fire arises, it burns the two pieces of wood, so too, Light Protector, if there is correct discriminating awareness, the king of transcendent wisdom will arise, and after it arises, it will burn that very correct discriminating awareness.' Thus, it is said that transcendent wisdom arises from discriminating awareness. In the 'Middle Stages of Meditation' it also says: 'Therefore, in this way, when the yogi analyzes with wisdom and does not apprehend the essence of any object as ultimately real, then he enters into non-conceptual samadhi. He also realizes the selflessness of all dharmas. If someone does not contemplate the essence of objects with wisdom by analyzing them individually, but only meditates on the mere abandonment of mental activity, then he will never be able to stop conceptual thought, and he will never realize selflessness, because there is no light of wisdom. In this way, if the fire of knowing things as they are arises from correct discriminating awareness, it will burn the wood of thought, just like the fire produced by rubbing wood.' Thus, the Bhagavan taught. Therefore, for meditation, thought is also very important. The previous holy ones said: Keep the dharmas you have heard before firmly in your mind.
