There are five aspects to the suffering of separation from what is loved: when separated from the poorest relatives, etc., it causes sorrow in the mind; uttering laments in speech; causing harm to the body; longing in the mind by remembering and desiring the qualities of that place; and the incompleteness of its enjoyments—these are what one contemplates. The seventh is the suffering of seeking desires but not finding them, contemplating it in five ways, similar to separation from what is loved. Its essence is: even if one farms, the harvest does not succeed; even if one does business, profits are not made, etc. Whatever one hopes for, even if one strives and seeks, it is not found, thus causing the suffering of disappointment. Although these exist for all beings included in the four births, they are mainly related to humans, so some consider it solely human suffering. The eighth is, in short, contemplating the meaning of the statement that the five aggregates of grasping are suffering, in five ways: as a vessel of manifest suffering; as a vessel of suffering dependent on manifest achievement; as a vessel of the suffering of suffering; as a vessel of the suffering of change; and as having become the nature of the suffering of conditioning—repeatedly contemplating these. The first of these is: relying on taking these five aggregates of grasping, one draws in sufferings from future lives onwards. The second is: relying on the aggregates already formed, they become the basis for aging, etc. The third and fourth are: the negative states of those two sufferings are connected in succession, thus generating those two sufferings. The fifth is: merely the achievement of the five aggregates of grasping gives rise to the nature of the suffering of conditioning, because all conditioning that is under the control of previous karma and afflictions is the suffering of conditioning. If a genuine sense of weariness does not arise towards the nature of cyclic existence of the five aggregates of grasping, genuine wisdom seeking liberation will not arise, and great compassion cannot arise for sentient beings wandering in cyclic existence. Therefore, whether entering the Great Vehicle or the Small Vehicle, this contemplation is extremely important. Second, contemplating the three general sufferings: all beings are without trust, never satisfied, and have entered since beginningless time. Contemplating the three sufferings reverses cyclic existence. All beings in cyclic existence are without certainty and never satisfied.
