The sign of wisdom arising well in the mind-stream through hearing and thinking is that, having understood the reasons, one develops genuine faith in all the Buddha's teachings without sectarian bias, both the Great and Small Vehicles, and in all the excellent spiritual friends who uphold those teachings. Without falling into the trap of preconceived notions and clinging only to one's own school of thought and religious tradition, one remains impartial and practices meticulously, without confusing the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect. All the Buddha's scriptural teachings, both sutras and tantras, are not merely left as words, but are transformed into instructions that are applied to one's own mind-stream, thereby liberating the mind-stream. This is the sign that hearing and thinking have reached the essential point. Therefore, even without specifically contemplating the minor points such as the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, if one is unable to hear and think properly, or even if one is able to hear and think, the meaning of what is heard and thought does not enter the mind-stream, then the minds of ordinary people are forcibly changed. The four ways of turning the mind, according to the tradition of the instruction masters, should be well considered and developed in the mind-stream. The second part has four points: turning the mind from this life, turning the mind from samsara, turning the mind from peace, and turning the mind from grasping and clinging. The first part has two points: contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity as the basis for turning the mind, and contemplating impermanence as the actual turning of the mind. The first point is: the precious human body endowed with eight freedoms and ten endowments is of great significance and difficult to obtain through cause and effect and examples. This has three points: identifying leisure and opportunity, contemplating its great significance, and contemplating its difficulty to obtain. The first point: the eight freedoms refer to being free from the eight states of unfreedom. The eight states of unfreedom are: four unfavorable environments, which are remote areas where the four types of rebirth do not occur; being foolish, mute, or having incomplete faculties such as limbs and ears; holding wrong views that deny past and future lives, cause and effect, and the Three Jewels; and the absence of a Buddha's appearance, and therefore the absence of the Buddha's teachings. These four are the unfreedoms of human existence. The three lower realms and the long-lived gods are the unfreedoms of non-human existence. The long-lived gods are explained in the "Letter to a Friend" as the unconscious and the formless realms. The former is located in one of the vast fruitions of the fourth dhyana, like a monastery far from a village, and the latter is an ordinary being born in the formless realm. In the discussion of the eight unfreedoms, one is always

It is said that the god of desire who distracts the mind is the long-lived god. Among the ten endowments, the five self-endowments are: to be born as a human, to be born in the central region (referring to a place with a sangha, etc., where one can practice the Dharma), to have complete faculties, not to have committed heinous crimes, and to have faith in the true Dharma. This is its meaning. Among them, being born in the central region means being born in a place where the fourfold assembly of disciples travels. Having complete faculties means not having become demented or deaf-mute, and having complete limbs, minor limbs, eyes, ears, etc. Not having committed heinous crimes means not having committed or instigated the commission of the five inexpiable sins. Having faith in the Dharma means having faith in the Vinaya, the place where all virtuous Dharmas of this world and beyond arise. Here, Vinaya refers to all three pitakas. These five are gathered by one's own continuum and are conducive conditions for practicing the Dharma, so they are called self-endowments. The five other-endowments are: the appearance of a Buddha, the teaching of the true Dharma, the abiding of the teachings, following the teachings, and loving-kindness for others. This is its meaning. Among them, the appearance or arising of a Buddha means accumulating merit for three countless eons and realizing complete enlightenment. Teaching the true Dharma means the Buddha or his shravakas teaching the Dharma. The abiding of the teachings means that from the time the Buddha attained enlightenment and taught the Dharma until he passed into nirvana, the Dharma practiced in the manner of realizing the ultimate Dharma has not declined. Following the teachings means recognizing that understanding the Dharma itself has the power to enable beings to realize the true Dharma, and therefore following the teachings as understood. Loving-kindness for others means donors and patrons giving robes, etc. These five exist in the continuum of others and are conducive conditions for practicing the Dharma, so they are other-endowments. Second, thinking that this itself is of great importance: having a human body endowed with the eight freedoms and ten endowments is extremely rare to obtain, and if obtained, one can accomplish all the states of higher rebirth and definite goodness, so it is called a precious human body because it is of great benefit. As it says in the Letter to a Disciple: Having relied on the Sugata's path, having become equipped to guide beings, whoever obtains a human body with great mental strength, that path is not obtained by gods or nagas or asuras, nor by garudas, vidyadharas, humans or what, nor by pretas. Therefore, among the three realms, now it is difficult to obtain even once a particularly excellent basis, and obtaining it is of great significance.
