I and the grasping at I. The so-called self of a person is what all sentient beings, including animals, are born with. The object of clinging of the innate self-grasping that grasps at I and mine is this very thing of presuming "I am." As the commentary on the Four Hundred says, "The so-called person is what is imputed in dependence on the aggregates." And, "The so-called self is the nature of things that does not depend on others." Although this is not established in the ultimate sense as the tirthikas falsely claim to be permanent, one, and independent, it is not merely imputed because the grasping enables it to be applied to conventions. Because "This is the path to liberation by which I enter the path to liberation," and so forth, and the various terms of I and mine are well-known in the world and harmless. As it says in the Entering the Middle Way, "Although separated from the view of the aggregates, the Buddhas also said 'I' and 'mine.' Likewise, although all things are without inherent existence, they are taught as being true in the provisional sense." Third, the reason why it must be refuted is: Because other knowledge and views arise from it, it must be refuted. Although this is established in name, it is not established in the ultimate sense, so it must be refuted by reason. Because based on clinging to I and mine, afflictive views and all afflictions such as attachment arise. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika, "If there is a self, then one knows others. From the division of self and others, attachment and hatred arise. Connected with these, all faults arise." And as it says in the Entering the Middle Way, "First, one clings to the self as 'I,' and then one generates attachment to things as 'mine.'" And, "All the faults of afflictions arise from the view of the aggregates, and having realized that the self is the object of this, the yogi eliminates the self." Fourth, the differences in realization among the various tenets are: All four tenets realize due to the differences in the way of realization. Since the meaning and terminology of emptiness are only found in the Madhyamaka school, the mere absence of a person's self is realized by all four of our own tenets due to the differences in the general and ultimate ways of realization. For example, in the treatises of the Vaibhāṣika school, the complete absence of a person's self is also fully explained, and the Sautrāntikas accept it.

What need is there to say more? Therefore, by familiarizing oneself with the selflessness of the person as established by the treatises of the Sutra and Abhidharma schools, one can directly see it. By familiarizing oneself with it, one can actualize nirvana, having abandoned the seeds of clinging to a self of the person. However, they both accept these two selflessnesses as real entities, because they are established as ultimate truths by reason of their ability to perform functions in the ultimate sense. At that time, the defining characteristics of these two are: any one of the two indivisible particles that are distinguished by negating the self as agent on the basis of the internal object of differentiation; and the object of the subtle particle that is distinguished by negating the coarse substance on the basis of the external object of differentiation. The Madhyamaka school, based on thorough understanding, and the Mind-Only school also hold that it can be understood in the same way. Fifth, the way to establish it with Madhyamaka reasoning is: The five aggregates are not the self, the self does not possess them. One does not exist in the other, the meaning of twenty aspects. The reasoner refutes with the reasoning of the chariot, etc. In general, the object to be focused on by this conceptual thought that grasps at a self is: the five aggregates themselves that are included in one's own continuum, and the aspect is the apprehended aspect of the grasping that looks at me as the self, focusing on that object. Therefore, the idea of grasping as the self always arises for any aggregate included in one's own continuum, and in other situations, there is also the concept of grasping as the self for one's own relatives, friends, houses, fields, etc., because if others harm them, this person will think that they are harming me. However, the apprehended aspect of the grasping of the conceptual thought that grasps there is a non-existent general meaning. In the face of the reasoning that examines the ultimate truth, let alone the existence of the self of the person, even in the face of the reasoning that examines the conventional truth, the self of the person does not exist. But without investigation or analysis, in accordance with the fame of the world, it is believed that there are persons and individuals. However, that is never the case as a real object. Therefore, although it does not exist in the two truths, it is acknowledged that it exists only as something imputed in mere convention. Regarding the refutation of its object, the twelve reasonings for refuting the object of the view of the world in general are explained.
