Furthermore, in the treatises of the Sautrāntika school, not only that, but also the negation that is divided by the two, substance and negation, is said to be without inherent existence. Its proof is that, for any dharma, when examined by the wisdom that examines ultimate truth, nothing is found, and merely establishing that as the meaning of no self-existence is the common rule of this school. As it is said: Whatever is destroyed and removed by the wisdom of another, then that wisdom does not accept it, like a water jar, it exists conventionally. In general, once a conventional dharma is promised, it must be promised that it is not truly established, which is the rule of all philosophical schools. In the treatises of the Sautrāntika school, it is also said: As it is conventionally imputed, that is not in the ultimate truth. And so on, there are very many scriptures that explain the negation of other phenomena as being without inherent existence. The Mind-Only school itself desires to realize the two selflessnesses, but when measured by Madhyamaka, it is the knowledge of the two emptinesses. Because it desires the ultimate truth, one side of the self of phenomena remains. Not only the lower schools, but also the Mahāyāna Mind-Only school wants to realize both selflessnesses in its own system, but when measured by Madhyamaka reasoning, because it desires the knowledge of the two emptinesses of grasping and being grasped as the ultimate truth, one side of the self of phenomena remains, so although it is not the ultimate two selflessnesses, it has abandoned the subtle and gross self of persons and the gross self of phenomena. In particular, the Mind-Only school, which believes in the reality of appearances, although it promises that the object of grasping, the external object, does not exist, because it promises that the appearance is mind, it does not want the two, grasping and being grasped, to be empty. Although it promises that the self of persons is completely non-existent, it has not thoroughly explained the way of establishing inner emptiness, so although it promises that the self of complete imputation is non-existent, it has not established that the self of complete imputation is non-existent. Fifth, the way of establishing by Madhyamaka reasoning is: Although there are many Madhyamaka reasonings, the five laws of the noble ones lead to the definite understanding of emptiness and dependent arising as a union. Candrakīrti, after preventing the grasped, by the sign of its non-existence, prevents the grasper and the conventional is one. By the reasoning of emptiness, he said that all phenomena are empty of the two. In the Madhyamaka school, there are many views of individual teachers, such as Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, on the reasoning for establishing the selflessness of phenomena, but in the school of the noble Nāgārjuna, the essence, cause,

Regarding the two truths, there are four observations, plus the reasoning of dependent origination. These five methods are used to guide the wisdom of the union of emptiness and dependent arising, as previously explained. Chandrakirti establishes the absence of self of phenomena in two different ways. As it is said: 'If there is no object of knowledge, then knowledge is also prevented, therefore, first, the object of knowledge is prevented.' As it is said, first, the apprehended is prevented, and then, based on the reason of the absence of the apprehended, the apprehending is prevented in sequence. And as it is said: 'Whoever sees one, sees all.' As it is said, after establishing one phenomenon of conventional truth as empty of self-nature, with the same reasoning, all knowable objects included in the two truths are established as empty of self-nature. This kind of establishment is also from the perspective of entering the Middle Way from the worldly path that has not been contaminated by any internal or external schools, not for other schools. Because those who have entered various schools, although they establish things as without self-nature, like the gross things spoken of by outsiders, due to the constraints of their schools, this reasoning does not transfer to other phenomena. Second, there are five points regarding the examination of the absence of self of persons: the key points of establishing it, the nature of the absence of self, the reasons why it must be refuted, the differences in realization among various schools, and the way to establish it with the reasoning of the Middle Way. The first point is: the views of internal and external schools are distinguished by the self of persons. Outsiders also have, as mentioned above, the realization of the coarse absence of self of phenomena and the aspect of practicing virtuous deeds, so the difference between the views of internal and external schools must be distinguished by whether or not they accept the self of persons. Because the absence of self of persons is the unique characteristic common to all Buddhist schools. Among them, there are two types of self of persons: the coarse one established by schools and the subtle one established by innate clinging. If one does not realize that the so-called self, which is the object of clinging by the way of clinging of innate view of self, is empty of self-nature, one cannot fully realize the absence of self of phenomena. Therefore, if one does not fully realize the absence of self of persons, one cannot realize the absence of self of phenomena. The second point is its nature: its nature is the innate self.
