It is the very basis and root of all forms of conceptualization that grasp things in a reversed manner. Generally, the Sanskrit term for "self" is "Atman" (梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:阿). If we take it in a broader sense, anything that can exist independently without relying on anything else is designated as "self." In this way, it is considered from the perspective of the self of phenomena. In a narrower sense, it refers to grasping "I" as self by focusing on the aggregates. In this way, it is considered from the perspective of the self of a person. The view of self is the view of the perishable collection. This refers to grasping as self by focusing on the collection of aggregates, which are of the nature of being perishable and impermanent. This is closely related to ignorance. As long as there is ignorance that is deluded about the four truths, this also exists. When that is abandoned, this is also abandoned. Its antidote is the wisdom that realizes selflessness. Because the view of self, which is concordant with ignorance, is contrary in nature to wisdom, it is an opposing factor. Therefore, if the view of self, along with the seed of ignorance, is not uprooted and abandoned, there is no way to be completely liberated from the three realms. If there is no wisdom that realizes selflessness, the view of self cannot be abandoned. Therefore, one should train in pure views through the three aspects of hearing, thinking, and meditation, and generate stainless wisdom. Third, explaining the essential points of the preliminary four seals: All conditioned phenomena are momentary and impermanent, All contaminated things are of the nature of the three sufferings, All defiled and purified phenomena are empty and selfless, Nirvana alone is liberation and peace. These are the four seals of the common Buddhist teachings, Think well about them and generate certainty at the beginning. When establishing selflessness through hearing and thinking, if certainty is not generated about the four seals of the view, it is said that it is difficult to generate certainty that thoroughly decides the meaning of selflessness. Therefore, one should first analyze these. That is, all conditioned phenomena, including internal and external ones, never have the opportunity to be permanent, so it is established as impermanent. Moreover, this impermanence is not just gross impermanence, which is complete change, but subtle impermanence, which is of the nature of ceasing at the same time as arising, without the freedom to remain even for a moment.

Just as oil is consumed moment by moment, and one realizes it in an instant, all compounded things are the same. Just as it is impossible for a rider and a mount to go, with one going and the other not, all objects of the senses are also established in an instant, because consciousness is the basis of the moment. Once this is established, suffering is also realized, because there is no independent power to remain, and it must perish in an instant. This is subtle suffering, the suffering of conditioned existence, that is, all compounded things have the characteristic of suffering from the moment they arise. Whatever is characterized by suffering cannot be the maker of happiness and suffering, because it has no autonomy. Thus, whatever is impermanent is contradictory to being a self and a maker. Whatever is aimed at, all that becomes the cause of taking up afflictions is tainted, and these do not go beyond the nature of suffering. Even animals realize suffering as the suffering of suffering, so there is no need to prove it with reason. The suffering of change, even ordinary individuals with discernment can directly realize as suffering, so there is no need to prove it with reason. The suffering that needs to be proven with reason is the suffering of conditioned existence, which children do not know as suffering but perceive as happiness. That is, all conditioned things arise and perish moment by moment, having the nature of impermanence, so there is no opportunity to remain even for a moment. Because there is no autonomy to remain, and they perish unwillingly, it is suffering. Moreover, if one does not want to perish, but perishes without autonomy, it is obviously suffering. Even if something perishes in an intermediate state that is neither wanting to perish nor not wanting to perish, it is still suffering, because that perishing also occurs without autonomy. Among the four truths, suffering and the origin are based on the same basis, with the origin being the cause and suffering being the result. For example, arising from the affliction of hatred, one commits the act of killing another sentient being, from the cause of the origin arises the result of the truth of suffering, thus forming the suffering of hell. Although it is like that, in general
