From the aspect of being able to appear and manifest, it is called a 'sign' (mtshan ma). 'Symbol' (brda) means, for the purpose of conceptually expressing that thing, a name is initially assigned. It has the temporality of enabling understanding and enabling expression. 'Convention' (tha snyad) means, as the agent of engagement, it is of the nature of the three—cognition, expression, and action. Among these, the cognition of thinking 'this is a pillar' is assigned cognition; expressing it with the sound 'pillar' is expression; and because it is a pillar, commencing the construction of a house is action. Although (the concept of 'pillar') does not exist in general things, it is forcibly assigned for the purpose of engagement and disengagement, just like assigning 'pillar' to a beam-supporting wood. These (terms) also differ in that: the aspect that merely expresses the essence of that thing is 'name' (ming); that which makes that thing manifest by representing it is 'sign' (mtshan ma); for the sake of convention, that which is applied by desire to something previously non-existent is 'symbol' (brda); and that which is expressed for the purpose of engagement and disengagement is 'convention' (tha snyad). 'Word' (tshig), according to the Abhidharma tradition, is the aggregation of names that express specific characteristics of a thing, such as 'conditioned' or 'impermanent'. According to the grammatical tradition, it is that which expresses the essence and various characteristics of a thing, having an ending of any of the cases, verbal roots (ting ra su pra). 'Meaning' (don) is the true nature of all phenomena, how they actually exist. So, how do letters (yige) function in these eight categories? They function through the power of the mind that apprehends sound (109b) and meaning by integrating them into one. For the generation of such a mind, at the time of establishing 'symbol', five qualities are required that differentiate cognition from others: apprehending the meaning, originating from sound, appearing as consistent, commonly renowned, and prominently adhering. Their respective functions are: apprehending the meaning generates the general capacity of meaning; originating from sound generates the general appearance of sound; appearing as consistent and commonly renowned generate adherence and enable others to understand; prominently adhering connects the name and the named. Thus, names and so forth arise from the sequentially generated phenomena; the detailed manner of distinguishing four or more types in the sequence of prominent adherence should be understood from the root text and commentary of the Eight Categories, and so forth.

Two. 1. Introduction by connection of necessity. 2. Actual exposition of the sciences. First: There is no object of knowledge that the Sons of the Victorious Ones should not learn. Therefore, in order to refute [errors], to accept [disciples], and to know all, one should learn the branches of knowledge. For the Bodhisattvas who have entered the Mahayana path, when seeking Dharma, there is nothing among the five sciences, etc., that is an object of knowledge not to be learned. This is because when accomplishing the stage of omniscience, effects similar to their causes arise. From the *Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra*: By the Sons of the Victorious Ones, There is nothing whatsoever that is not to be learned. For a wise person who abides in such a state, There is nothing that does not turn into merit. And: Nāgārjuna said: From all such seeds, Effects similar to their causes arise. That there is an effect without a seed, What intelligent person can prove that? Thus it is said (110na). This principle of effects similar to causes arising from similar causes is also in accord with worldly custom, and therefore, it is established that one must train the mind in all objects of knowledge. Furthermore, first Nāgārjuna said: Without relying on conventional truth, The ultimate truth cannot be taught. Without realizing the ultimate truth, Nirvana will not be attained. Thus, even the realization of the ultimate nature of reality must rely on conventional truth. And if all its aspects are summarized, they are gathered into the ten sciences. Moreover, since the five minor sciences are branches (sub-categories) of the science of sound (grammar), etc., primarily there are the five sciences. Furthermore: the science of sound (grammar) and logic (pramāṇa) refute errors in words and meanings; the sciences of crafts and medicine guide disciples in general and in particular; and the inner science (Buddhist philosophy) enables one to know all aspects of the path to accomplish one's own omniscience. Therefore, as they are also gathered into these three sciences: refuting [errors], guiding [disciples], and omniscience, one should learn these. From the Sutra: If a Bodhisattva does not learn the five sciences, they can never attain the omniscient wisdom of unsurpassable, perfect, complete enlightenment. Therefore, it is said that in order to attain unsurpassable enlightenment, one should learn the five sciences. Regent...
