The agent itself and its action are called "self"; the object of action to be stimulated by it (108a) and its action are called "other." Similarly, whether directly related or unrelated to another agent, an action already performed is the past tense; an action that will be performed is the future tense; and an action being performed is the present tense. Furthermore, the two divisions of verbs, "agentive verb" (byed pa'i las) and "patientive verb" (bya ba'i las), are also included in these divisions. According to the three tenses, the agentive verb belongs to the present tense, and the patientive verb belongs to the future tense. And in terms of self and other, the action directly related to another agent is the self (subject), and the object of action is the other (object), as just explained. Therefore, the division of the three tenses encompasses all verbal constructions related to active verbs. Although the division of self and other does not encompass as much, the division of self and other arose separately in order to categorize the words for the agent and the object of action. Among these, the nouns for the agent (self) are: accomplish-er, teacher, means of accomplishing, means of teaching, and so on. The verbs that clarify its (the agent's) action are: is accomplishing, is teaching, accomplishes, teaches, and so on. The nouns for the object of action (other) are: that which is to be accomplished, that which is to be taught, the object of accomplishment, the object of teaching, and so on. Its verbs of action are: will be accomplished, will be taught, is accomplished, is taught, and so on. Not included therein, from the three tenses: the words for past tense are: accomplished, taught, completed, and so on. The words for present tense are: is accomplishing, is teaching, is causing to be completed, is explaining, and so on. The words for future tense are: will be completed, will be explained, will be completed, will be explained, should be completed, should be explained, and many others. For example, "iron was transformed into gold" (lcags gser du bsgyur) is directly related to an agent. And "iron became gold" (lcags gser du gyur) is not directly related to an agent (108b). Sixth [Reading Methods]: First, after removing the vowel, practice compound reading. Generate and utter the corresponding place, effort, and articulation. From what is known, what, by what, how; How to apply, etc., (like) Thumi (grammar).

...of the good treatise. The origin of speech is the activity of the Buddhas. Regarding the order of learning methods, one should first train in pronunciation. Pronunciation here refers to the sound itself, therefore one should practice the individual letters in accordance with their respective places of articulation, and also the vowels with their respective ways of pronunciation, thereby training in the sound and tone of each letter as it is read. After becoming proficient in this, one should practice the reading method of combining prefixes, suffixes, and root letters into one syllable. These, too, are based on the above-mentioned Sanskrit (Lekhsbyar) classifications, producing their respective places of articulation, and articulating and reciting them with their internal and external efforts in accordance with each. The details can be understood from the works of the Venerable Sonam Tsemo (rje btsun bsod nams rtse mo'i gsung rab), etc. After becoming skilled in reading, the detailed explanations of where the prefixes and suffixes are applied, by whom they are applied, how they are applied, and for what purpose they are applied, etc., should be studied from Thonmi Sambhota's (Thumi Sambhota) excellent treatises, the "Thirty Verses" (Sum cu pa) and the "Treatise on the Application of Gender Signs" (Rtags kyi 'jug pa). This treatise, in this snowy land (Tibet), is the origin or root from which all speech arises, established as the activity of the Buddhas. It is not merely a scrutiny by an individual's intellect. 27. The Seventh [Explanation of the Eight Places of Application]: All sounds that are grasped and local languages, The name of the essence and the designating mark, Conventions that convey understanding and common terms, know and speak to apply, The eight places of word and meaning, the mind grasping the mingled sound and meaning, The object-focused, sound-arising, common appearance, widely renowned, Are born endowed with the five Dharmas of progressive manifest attachment. All instances where letters are used to convey meaning rely on the eight places of application (109a). These eight are: sound and language, name and sign, convention and usage, word and meaning. Among these, "sound" here refers to the sound produced by sentient beings, which explains and teaches. "Language" refers to the conventional language of one's own region, such as India, Tibet, China, etc., which facilitates understanding. "Name" refers to the inherent designation of an essence, which, according to the Abhidharma (Chos mngon pa) system, is the self-nature of aggregated letters, and according to the grammatical (Brda sprod pa) system, is a word ending in a case (rnam dbye). For example, "pot," "lion," etc., are called "Nama (Sanskrit Devanagari: नाम, Sanskrit Romanization: nāma), meaning 'name'". It represents that meaning…
