The first and second (of the groups), and sha, ksha, sa, and those with tongue roots (gutturals) and those with lips (labials). Unaspirated (small breath) are: the first, third, and fifth of the groups, and the final letters. Aspirated (large breath) are: the second and fourth of the groups, and sha, ksha, sa, ha. Voiced are: the third, fourth, and fifth of the groups, and those with resonance, and the final letters and the letter ha. Fricatives (warm sounds) are: the second and fourth of the groups, and sha, ksha, sa, ha. In other treatises, only sha, ksha, sa, ha are explained as fricative letters. At this juncture, although the method of reciting mantras is crucial, it cannot be fully explicated with brevity; thus, it must solely be understood from the works composed by the venerable ancients. 2. Second [Tibetan Language System]: In Tibetan, the four indicators of vowels (āli) are i and so forth (vowel signs). The thirty consonants (kāli) are divided into prefixes, suffixes, and root letters. With simple prefixes, head letters, stacked letters, subscript letters, and suffixes. The Tibetan letters corresponding to the Tibetan language are fundamentally vowels (āli) and consonants (kāli), comprising two series: the vowel series (a-phreng) (106b) and the consonant series (ka-phreng). Among these, the explicit indicators of the function of vowels (āli) are i and so forth, namely the four: gi-gu (i), zhabs-kyu (u), 'greng-bu (e), rna-ru (o). These are combined with 'a' because 'a' alone cannot be pronounced. There are exactly thirty consonants (kāli) from ka to 'a'. Among them, ga, da, ba, ma, 'a are the five prefixes; ga, nga, da, na, ba, ma, 'a, ra, la, sa are the ten suffixes. The remaining twenty are the root letters, thus divided. Furthermore, the prefixes are placed before words, the suffixes are placed only after words, and the root letters serve as the foundation for letters that are not placed as prefixes or suffixes. When these letters form words, there are those that are solely simple, like 'ka-ba'; those prefixed by a simple prefix, like 'mgo-bo' (head); those prefixed by a subscript letter, like 'bye-ba' (division); and those prefixed by a stacked letter, like 'bsgrub-bya' (to be accomplished). There are three with 'ra', 'la', 'sa' as head letters (superscripts). Letters stacked three each, like 'sgra' (sound). The four subscripts: ya, ra, la, wa. The ten suffixes are included, like 'rtag' (constant) with a simple suffix; and like 'rtags' (sign) with a secondary suffix. 5. Fifth [Mode of Combination]: By combining cases (rnam-dbye), particles (phrad), etc., meaning is conveyed. Agent and patient, three tenses (past, present, future), action and actor.

Entering through the door (of grammar). When transforming a noun into a verb, the case particles dependent on post-suffixes (such as the re-collection/final particle, dative particle, instrumental particle, etc.), together with the six independent particles (such as the particle 'ni' used for expressing 'separation' and 'emphasis'), are combined to form words that convey meaning and distinctions of meaning. The combinations of prefixes and suffixes are used to express subject and object, the three times (past, present, future), and action and agent. Thus, from the aggregation of many letters, words are formed; and from the aggregation of many words, sentences are formed. Regarding their functions, Acharya Lodro Tenpa said: "That which expresses the essence of meaning is a noun; That which shows its distinctions is a sentence; That which expresses nothing at all is a letter." Thus he spoke. For example, words like "vase" and "cow" are nouns that express the essence of a thing. (Page 107a) Sentences like "conditioned," "impermanent," and "afflicted," "suffering" are phrases that show its distinctions. Like "ཨ་ཨཱ་ཀ་ཁ་ག་གྷ་ང་" (A Ā Ka Kha Ga Gha Nga) and so on, those that express nothing at all are letters. A part of a sentence cannot fully express distinctions of meaning without the inclusion of case endings and particles. Case endings (`rnam dbye`) are so called because they differentiate meanings such as "action" (`las`) and "agent" (`byed pa`), and they differentiate the forms of words, such as "singular," "dual," and "plural." Among these, the first case (nominative), which expresses the essence of a thing, for example, "Buddha" (`sangs rgyas`), "Dharma" (`chos`), "deity" (`lha`), "self" (`bdag`), etc., merely expresses the essence of a thing and does not show its distinctions. Although Sanskrit has suffixes for the first case, in Tibetan, there is no distinction between the first case and a bare noun. "Buddha" (`sangs rgyas`) indicates singular, "two Buddhas" (`sangs rgyas dag`) indicates dual, and "many Buddhas" (`sangs rgyas rnams`) indicates plural, and others can be inferred similarly. The second case (accusative), which indicates the object of an action, for example, "I prostrate to the Buddha" (`sangs rgyas la phyag 'tshal lo`), "going to India" (`rgya gar du 'gro`), etc., uses the particles "la" and "du" to indicate the object of the action. The third case (instrumental), which indicates the agent, for example, "the Buddha taught the Dharma" (`sangs rgyas kyis chos gsung`), "I will do the work" (`bdag gis las bya`), etc., uses the particles "kyis" and "gis" to indicate the agent. The fourth case (dative for purpose), which indicates purpose, for example, "giving food to a beggar" (`slong mo ba la zas sbyin`), "leading water to irrigate the field" (`zhing la chu 'dren`), etc., uses the particle "la" to imply that the action benefits that object. The fifth case (ablative for source), which indicates source or relation, for example, "Dharma from the Buddha" (`sangs rgyas las chos`), "jewels from the ocean" (`rgya mtsho nas rin po che`), etc., indicates the source from which a thing originated.
