Is. That which expresses, as it expresses all meanings. 2.3 The third [aspect] is: Letter forms such as Lantsha, etc. This means: Letter forms are the infinite classifications of letters, principally the sixty-four types of Brahmi script, Lantsha, etc. 2.4 The fourth [classification] has two: 1) The Sanskrit tradition; 2) The Tibetan language tradition. 2.4.1 The first (Sanskrit tradition) is: Classification, merely common, of the Noble Land (India)'s Four language families, principally Sanskrit, Vowel letters, corresponding ones, conjuncts, and consonants are: Class series, end-positioned, sibilants, these are the fundamentals. Alivowels one hundred and thirty-two, among Kaliconsonants, Thirty-two individual ones, with vowels, four thousand and Three hundred and fifty-six, these have eight places [of articulation], and Are produced from action, effort, and external/internal exertion. The classifications of letters, although there are many systems taught in various phonology treatises and non-common tantras, commonly in the Noble Land (India), among the four great renowned language families, principally in Sanskrit, there are two: vowels and consonants. Regarding vowels: From A (a), Ā (ā) to Ṛ (ḷ), ḹ (ḹ), there are ten corresponding letters. E (e), Ai (ai), O (o), Au (au) are the four conjunct letters. Together, these combine to make sixteen vowels. Regarding consonants: The five class series like Ka-series, the four end-positioned letters Ya (ya), Ra (ra), La (la), Wa (wa), and the four sibilant letters like Sha (ṣa), are said to be thirty-three, which are the fundamentals. Further classifications in the Cāndra school: for the four A (a), I (i), U (u), Ṛ (ṛ), there are short, long, and very long, making three each. For each of these, pronounced with high tone is Udātta, pronounced with low tone is Anudātta, pronounced with middle tone is Svarita, making three each. This results in thirty-six. These are further divided into two each: with subsequent nasalization and without subsequent nasalization (105b), making seventy-two. For the four conjuncts, there are no short ones, so there are two each: long and very long. For Laṁ (laṃ), there is no long one, so there are two: short and very long. Each of these five is further divided into three: Udātta, Anudātta, and Svarita, making thirty. These include thirty nasalized and thirty non-nasalized, making sixty. Combined with the above, there are one hundred and thirty-two Āli (vowels). For Kāli (consonants), there are thirty-three individual letters. This...

The *visarga* (Sanskrit truncation mark above), nasal sound, palatal root sound, and labial sound, these four added together, make thirty-seven. Among the thirty-three basic consonants, even for the single letter “ga”, three hundred thirty-two vowels are included. In total, there are four thousand three hundred fifty-six consonants. These letters are also produced by relying on place, articulator, and effort. The places are: Chest and throat, the crown of head, Also root of tongue and teeth are said, Nose, lips, and palate too, These are the eight places whence letters brew. As it is said, the sound “A”, the Ka group (ka, kha, ga, gha, ṅa), the letter Ha, and the *visarga* are all sounds produced in the throat. The sounds “I”, “E”, “Ai” (i, e, ai) are produced in the throat and palate. The sounds “U”, “O”, “Au” (u, o, au) are produced in the throat and lips. The sound “Ri” (ṛ), the Ṭa group (ṭa, ṭha, ḍa, ḍha, ṇa), the letter Ra, and the letter Ṣa are all produced at the crown of the head. The palatal root sound is the root of the tongue. The sound “Li” (ḷ), the Ta group (ta, tha, da, dha, na), the letter La, and the letter Sa are all produced at the teeth. The anusvāra (nasal follow-on sound) is produced at the nose. The sounds Da, Nya, ṇa, Na, Ma, etc., are produced at the nose after their respective throat, etc., places. The sound “I”, the Ca group (ca, cha, ja, jha, ña), the letter Ya, and the letter Śa are all produced at the palate. The sound “U”, the Pa group (pa, pha, ba, bha, ma), and labial letters are all produced at the lips. The letter Va is produced at the teeth and lips. Here, “chest” refers to the letters produced in the throat relying on the chest as a place of articulation, and other letters also relying on the throat. Therefore, it is established that they must also rely on the chest as a place, and hence it is stated this way. Regarding the articulator, the articulator for palatal root sounds is the root of the tongue. The articulator for sounds produced at the teeth/gums is the middle of the tongue. The articulator for sounds produced at the crown/top is the tip of the tongue and its vicinity. The articulator for dental sounds is the tip of the tongue. The remaining sounds have their own place of articulation as the articulator. The effort (of articulation) has two types: internal and external. Internal effort of articulation also has four types: closed, open, touched, and slightly touched. Among these, the sound “A” has the closed effort of articulation. The open effort of articulation is for other vowels and the warm sounds. What is referred to as “warm sounds” here will be explained below. The touched effort of articulation is for the grouped letters, which are pronounced loudly after being pressed with great effort. The slightly touched effort of articulation is for the final letters (or semi-vowels). External effort of articulation also has five types: voiceless, unaspirated, aspirated, voiced, and warm sounds. The voiceless ones are the groups
