On the basis of possessing pure precepts, extensively listening to all knowable subjects, especially the supreme Dharma, including the teachings of Sutra and Tantra, is the foundation of all virtues. As stated in the *Bodhisattvapiṭaka Sūtra*: By hearing, one knows all dharmas. By hearing, one turns away from all evils. By hearing, one abandons all meaninglessness. By hearing, one attains Nirvāṇa. The meaning herein, in sequence, is: by understanding internal and external tenets (views), one knows what to adopt and what to reject; by hearing the training in morality (śīla), one turns away from misdeeds; by hearing the training in mind (samādhi), one completely abandons meaningless desires; and by hearing the training in wisdom (prajñā), one attains the Nirvāṇa realized without defilements. These four points are explained in the *Viniścayasaṁgrahaṇī*. The *Abhidharmasamuccaya* states that there are five benefits of extensive hearing, and also, other sūtras and treatises extensively expound upon the countless virtues of extensive hearing. Therefore, one should first seek extensive hearing without bias. Second, the three ways of seeking hearing, as explained according to the *Bodhisattvabhūmi*: What to seek: Sūtra Piṭaka, Abhidharma Piṭaka, crafts. How to seek: with reverence and diligence as companions. Why to seek: for the sake of true meaning, etc. (103na) Among these, what should Bodhisattvas who seek Dharma seek? They should seek the Sūtra Piṭaka, the Abhidharma Piṭaka, and also the worldly crafts (śilpakarmasthānavidyā) and knowledge of activities. What is the Sūtra Piṭaka? It refers to the Bodhisattvapiṭaka and the Śrāvakapiṭaka. Among the twelve divisions of the sacred texts, the exceedingly extensive Sūtra Piṭaka is the first, and the remaining parts are explained as the Śrāvakapiṭaka. These are called inner treatises or inner sciences. What is the Abhidharma Piṭaka? In summary, there are three types: treatises on logic (hetuvidyā), grammar (śabdavidyā), and medicine (cikitsāvidyā). In terms of the two teachers (Buddha and non-Buddhist teachers), these are called external treatises. Third, those belonging to crafts and so on, numbering thirty or more, are categorized as worldly sciences and are not counted as treatises. How to seek? By understanding it as the cause for the near attainment of the fruit, with unceasing reverence and diligence as constant companions, one thoroughly knows what is to be known.

Seek until not yet enlightened. Why seek? In the sutra called “Definitive Characteristics of All Dharmas”, it states: Manjushri, by knowing the essence and characteristics of all dharmas, one attains the correct understanding of each meaning. By being skilled in various classifications and their establishment, one attains the correct understanding of each eloquence. By being skilled in various synonyms, one attains the correct understanding of each dharma. By being skilled in definitive terms (etymology), one attains the correct understanding of each definitive term. Manjushri, therefore, if one seeks omniscience, one should first cultivate the wisdom of hearing and reflection: for this (wisdom of hearing and reflection) is the mother of all Buddhas, it is said. In the “Designation Sutra”, it states: Being skilled in names, phrases, and letters means being skilled in the meaning of that dharma (103b). Being skilled in superior terms means being skilled in definitive terms. Through unobstructed mastery of these, one attains the correct understanding of various eloquences, and so on, it is stated, and also explained in accordance with this in the “Abhidharmakosha Commentary”. Especially in the “Sutra on Skillful Means and Repaying Kindness”: The necessity of studying the five sciences is extensively taught, and its summarized meaning appears as follows during the search for the Bodhisattva’s conduct of Dharma: So, why does a Bodhisattva seek to hear the Dharma? A Bodhisattva seeks (to hear the Dharma) in order to practice diligently according to the Dharma, and in order to extensively and correctly teach others, they thoroughly seek the Buddha’s words. A Bodhisattva seeks the principles of logic (hetuvidya), in order to thoroughly and correctly understand the well-explained and poorly-explained points within the treatises, and in order to defeat opposing debaters, and in order to cause those without faith in this teaching to develop faith, and in order to further increase the faith of those who already have it. A Bodhisattva seeks phonetics (shabdavidya/grammar), in order to make those who are inclined to express themselves with excellent words, letters, and excellent definitive terms (etymology) have confidence in themselves, and in order to be able to apply various definitive terms (etymology) to a single meaning in subsequent conceptual designations.
