Thus, it is said by the vanquished: If one is not diligent in the five abodes of knowledge, Even the supreme noble ones will not attain omniscience. Therefore, for the sake of subduing others and bringing them under guidance, And for oneself to know all, one should diligently strive in them. J2. Second, the actual explanation of the Abodes of Knowledge is twofold: K1. The Greater Abodes of Knowledge, and K2. The Lesser Abodes of Knowledge. K1. The first (Greater Abodes) has four: T1. Phonetics/Grammar (Sabda-vidyā); T2. Logic/Epistemology (Pramāṇa-vidyā); T3. Arts and Crafts (Śilpa-karma-vidyā); T4. Medicine (Cikitsā-vidyā). T1. The first (Phonetics/Grammar) has three: Th1. Brief Exposition; Th2. Extensive Explanation; Th3. Concluding Meaning. Th1. The first (Brief Exposition) is: (110b) Grammar, which removes verbal errors, Comprises three: root, suffix, and inflection. The science of grammar, which eradicates and removes errors in expressive speech, comprises three: root (nature), suffix/particle, and inflection. Th2. The second (Extensive Explanation) has three: D1. Root, D2. Suffix, D3. Inflection, each explained separately. D1. The first of these (Root) also has two: N1. Verbal Root (Dhatu), N2. Nominal Root (Pratipadika). N1. The first (Verbal Root) is: The verbal roots are of six types: read and unread, Those possessing both, nominal roots, and roots of both. In summary, they comprise two: with action and without action. The basis upon which something is constructed by suffixes, etc., is the root (nature). Of these, there are two: actual and metaphorical. "Dhatu" or root is the actual basis of formation in grammar. Internally, these are divided into six types. As taught in the nine chapters of the Dhatu-sutra: “bhū” (བྷུ་,भू,bhū,to exist) signifies 'to be/exist'. “cittī” (ཙི་ཏཱི་,चित्ती,cittī,to think) signifies 'to think'. These and similar are the fully 'read' (canonical) verbal roots. “adolayati” (ཨ་དོ་ལ་ཡ་ཏི་,अदोलयति,adolayati,to swing) and others that are not found in any sutra or commentary but are known in worldly usage, are the fully 'unread' (non-canonical) verbal roots. “ju” (ཛུ་,जु,ju,to bind) and “ka” (སྐ་,क,ka,joy) and others that appear in the margins of sutras and Indian commentaries but are not enumerated in the main collection of verbal roots, are 'sutra roots' or roots that are 'both read and unread', possessing both characteristics. The twenty types, such as “sanra” (སནྲ་,सन्न,sannra, gathered) and others, to which the 'ya-kra' suffixes are applied, like “kaṇḍū” (ཀཎྜཱུ་,कण्डू,kaṇḍū,itch), are also nouns, as "kaṇḍū" literally means 'body itch'. They are also roots (dhatu), and since the 'ya-kra' suffixes can be further applied, they are nominal roots. When any verbal root is combined with any of the twelve suffixes such as "sanra" etc.,

English
Its end, which also transforms into a root, is the root of the suffix. Or, because from a fully recited root, a noun can be formed; or, because from nouns, a root can also be formed, therefore, the endings after the removal of suffixes like "kvipra" are both nouns and suffixes (111a). Furthermore, because the establishment of "kun bshad" (universal explanation/commentary) also applies, from that perspective, it can also transform into a root. Thus, there are roots of suffixes and roots of nouns, making a total of six. When these are categorized, they are gathered into two: "action-related" (las bcas) and "non-action-related" (las med). This is also as stated by Puñjarāja: When conceiving, knowing, seeing, hearing, Eating and intercourse, Doing, selling, grasping and stealing, Giving, offering, desiring and touching, Loving, praising, clinging and enduring, Nourishing, thinking, going, stopping, etc., Speaking, killing, and other actions, By expression, they are known to be action-related. As stated thus, any root, such as conceiving, knowing, seeing, hearing, etc., which possesses an action, and for the object of that action, the second case (accusative case) must be applied, therefore that which is accompanied by action is "action-related." From Tsho Ldan Ma'i rab byed (A Chapter by Tsho Ldan Ma): When there is shame and abiding, Increase, decrease, fear, living and dying, Sleeping, playing, meaning of luminosity, These groups of roots are explained as "non-action-related." Such as "shī dra" for sleeping, Roots like these do not require an accusative case etc., as their actions arise inherently by their very nature, thus they are called "non-action-related." Here, to illustrate for those unfamiliar with grammar: a "root" (byings) is like the Tibetan letter "ཀ" (ka) etc., which by itself does not express meaning. For example, "bhū" means "to be" or "existence," and only expresses the basic stem of "existence," not anything else. Adding a "suffix" (rkyen) is like adding prefixes and suffixes. For instance, by adding the prefix "བ་" (ba) and the suffix "འ་" (a) to "ཀ" (ka), it forms "བཀའ་" (bka'), which expresses meanings such as "sacred speech." Similarly, by adding the suffix "acṛ" to "bhū," it forms "bhava," which is used for "existence." By adding "ghaṇr," it forms "bhāva," which is used for "being" or "thing," meaning a noun is formed from a root. As for "transformation" (rnam 'gyur), just as in the Tibetan language, "ཡ་ར་ལ་" (ya ra la) changes its form, here too, the root "bhū" when appended with the suffix "acṛ" transforms into another form, "bhava."
