Discrimination. Accumulations perfected, obscurations purified, all hindrances completely pacified. One also attains the state of a noble being. And quickly enters the city of liberation. Thus it is said. Furthermore, (the practitioner) approaches Buddhahood (11a) and pleases the Victors (Buddhas). Is not deprived of spiritual friends. Does not fall into lower realms. Negative karma and afflictions are difficult for them to overcome. Does not go against the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and with mindfulness, the accumulation of virtues will progressively increase. All temporary and ultimate goals are accomplished. Furthermore, by revering a spiritual friend, The karma that leads to experiencing lower realms, even if one experiences slight harm to body and mind in this life, or experiences it in a dream, that karma will be ripened and exhausted. The roots of virtue from offering to countless Buddhas and so forth, are surpassed by its benefits. Thus, it is said that the benefits are great. If one relies incorrectly, In this life, one will be harmed by many illnesses and demons. In future lives, one will experience immeasurable suffering in the lower realms. Unborn virtues will not arise, and those that have arisen will also decline. In the *Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra*, it is said: “Lord of Secrets, how should a disciple view the master?” “Just as one views the Buddha, the Blessed One.” The Mahayana Sutras and Vinaya also state this. Therefore, one should abandon the mind that seeks faults and rely with great reverence that surpasses even that for the Buddha. The benefits of offering to the Lama are also inconceivable: In the *Guhyasamaja Tantra*, it is said: “The merit of offering to a single pore of the Lama is greater than offering to the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times.” In the *Sri Sambhava Sutra*, it is said: “If one pleases a spiritual friend, one will attain the enlightenment of a Buddha.” In short, (by relying on a spiritual friend) one perfects the accumulations of merit and wisdom, All adverse conditions and obstacles are pacified. Great glory and prosperity. Swiftly attaining Buddhahood (11b) and so forth, visible (in this life), And countless unseen virtues of Dharma are obtained. In general, the supreme objects (of veneration) are the Lama, Khenpo, Acarya, the sick, the Dharma speaker, and so on.

Whatever actions, whether meritorious or non-meritorious, are performed towards Bodhisattvas of the final existence, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddha Aryas, and parents, have great power. \t\t\tFrom the Treasury (Abhidharmakosha), it states: \t\t\t“Though not an Arya, towards parents, \t\t\tThe sick and those who speak the Dharma, \t\t\tAnd Bodhisattvas of the final existence, \t\t\tThe merits are said to be immeasurable.” \t\t\tThis is also found (there). \t\t\tThe eighth (chapter) explains abandoning adversaries, which are of two types: 1. Evil friends, and 2. Obstacles from Māra. \t\t\tThe first (type) is: \t\t\tThose with evil dispositions, little pure perception, great partiality, \t\t\tClinging to the supreme, praising oneself, disparaging others, are evil friends. \t\t\tGenerally, all lamas, abbots, teachers, spiritual companions, and so forth, who are attached to the appearances of this life and engage others in non-virtuous actions, are non-virtuous friends and should be abandoned. \t\t\tSpecifically, even if they appear to possess good conduct, those who hinder liberation, have evil dispositions, little pure perception, great partiality, hold only their own views and Dharma as supreme, praise themselves, disparage others, subtly scorn and reject other religious traditions, and disparage virtuous lamas and spiritual friends who bear the burden of others' welfare—when one associates with such types, one also becomes inclined towards them and befriends them, and their faults gradually infect one, leading to one's own disposition becoming evil. \t\t\tFrom the Vinaya Sutra, it states: \t\t\t“Before people, a rotten fish, \t\t\tWrapped tightly with kusha grass. \t\t\tSoon, the kusha grass itself, \t\t\tWill become like that. \t\t\tSimilarly, by associating with evil friends, \t\t\tOne will continuously become like them.” \t\t\tIt is stated just like this. (12 recto) \t\t\tTherefore, from the Satipatthana (Mindfulness) Sutra, it is said: “The main hindrance to all virtuous Dharmas is evil friends. Even merely associating with them, speaking with them, or being touched by their shadow should be abandoned.” As such, one should always diligently strive to abandon evil companionship. \t\t\tThe second (type) is [obstacles from Māra]: \t\t\tObstacles from Māra are overcome by recognizing them and applying antidotes. \t\t\tWhen one encounters the true Dharma and a Lama, and engages in hearing, contemplating, and meditating, at that time, obstacles from Māra will arise. \t\t\tFrom the Sutra of Accumulation, it states:
