And so on, as extensively taught. Second, on subduing Māras: In the Sūtra Requested by Jñānasāgara, it is stated: For myself, it is a physician; for the Dharma, it is medicine; the listener is a patient; the Tathāgata is a holy person; and the Dharma's way endures for a long time—generate these five perceptions, and one must recite mantras such that within one hundred *yojanas*, the gods of the Māra realm cannot approach, as taught, one should act. Third, on purifying one's conduct: Abandoning bodily actions such as lying down, (13b) leaning, stretching one's legs, and so forth, one should act in the manner of Śākyamuni turning the Wheel of Dharma. Abandoning excessive speech, repetition, weak vocal tones, high or low pitches, and so forth, one should explain clearly and purely with perfect vocal components. Abandoning mental attachment and hatred, one should, according to the occasion, practice *śūnyatā* (emptiness) and deity *samādhi* (meditative absorption). With the thought of wishing to establish all sentient beings in benefit and happiness, one should contemplate it as if raining Dharma. 2. Second, [the actions of a student]: Offering gifts, observing proper conduct, and cultivating joy. Among the three actions of a student: First, offering pure gifts: Preceding with prostrations, touching the ground with five parts of the body, offer pleasing gifts and a greatly visualized maṇḍala. Second, observing respectful conduct: In the *Jātakamālā* (Stories of Previous Lives), it is stated: Sit upon a very low seat, Clearly cultivate the glory of humility. Gaze with joyful eyes, Words are like drinking nectar. With an immaculate, utterly clear mind, Generate reverence and single-pointedly attend. Like a patient listening to a doctor's words, Generate respect and listen to the Dharma. As taught, abandoning actions such as lying down, leaning, turning one's back on the guru, and so forth, sitting cross-legged or kneeling, endowed with respectful conduct, ceasing speech, one-pointedly listens. Third, cultivating joy in the gathering of conducive conditions: In the *Guhyācintya Sūtra* (Sūtra of Inconceivable Secrets), it is stated: The appearance of Buddhas in the world is rare, A human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Alas, faith and listening to the Dharma, Such as this is exceedingly rare in the world. As taught, having gathered these conditions, listening to the Dharma...

Listen with joy and delight in this. (14a) Chapter 2: The main body has three parts. 1. The master teaches well. 2. The disciples listen respectfully. 3. Both master and disciple practice the six perfections. Section 1: The first part has three. 1. The characteristics of the speaker. 2. The method of teaching based on what. 3. The manner of how to teach. Subsection 1: Its first part also has three. 1. The wisdom of the wise. 2. A compassionate mind. 3. The practice endowed with patience. Firstly, this means: The three skillful ones in the main body, Here it is said that, as the foremost among the eight characteristics of the speaker in the context of teaching the sacred Dharma, the three skillful ones are: skill in what is to be taught, skill in how to teach, and skill in conduct. Firstly, although it is excellent to be skilled in all knowables or the Tripitaka, here it is necessary to have a speaker who is skillful in the words, meanings, scriptural citations, reasoning, and oral instructions of what is to be taught, because only then can they dispel the doubts of the trainees. Secondly, this refers to pure expressive language, where the speech is coherent regardless of where one speaks from, appropriate no matter how much one speaks, and reasonable no matter how one speaks – these three interconnected aspects of speech; and possessing a sweet voice capable of delighting others, these are the three. Furthermore, in the *Sutra-alamkara* (Ornament for the Sutras), it is said: Language and words are very rational, Teaching and analysis dispel doubts, One who engages in it many times, For those who understand the initial extensive explanation. The teachings of the Buddhas, Are purified by the three circles, This should be known as being free from the eight faults. Laziness and incomprehension, Not discerning the proper occasion and uncertainty, Not dispelling doubts, Not demonstrating freedom from these. Weariness and stinginess, These are considered faults of speech. Because these are absent, the Buddhas' Teaching becomes unsurpassed. Thus, (14b) being free from the eight faults of speech, it is taught as a teaching purified by the three circles. In the *Vyakhyayukti* (Method of Exposition), it is also said that one should teach endowed with twenty types of Dharma discourses as an antidote to the eleven faults of expression. Thirdly, this refers to being skilled in one's own conduct, being worthy of respect by all through the virtuous deeds of body, speech, and mind; and being skilled in the conduct of the trainees, which means understanding their faculties, dispositions, and latent tendencies, and thereby teaching the Dharma in accordance with these.
