Since meaning must be sought through sound or word, by becoming skilled in the three—name, word, and letter—explained in the common Abhidharma, and in the uncommon elaborations of name, word, and letter found in treatises on rhetoric and grammar, etc., each part of the words should be clearly distinguished and presented without confusion. Then, whatever the subject matter of that treatise may be, its meaning should be explained without excess, omission, or error. Fourth, regarding connection, there are two types. Connection of words is: for some instances where the power of the preceding word cannot draw forth the subsequent one, or if it can but is not explicitly clear, or even if clear (folio 16na), some methods of connection are difficult to understand—these should be explained for easy comprehension by showing how the meaning of the preceding and subsequent words are thus related. Connection of meaning is: for example, after having briefly taught something thus, then saying "in order to explain that very thing extensively"; or by means of contradiction and connection; or by linking things like what is to be abandoned and its antidote, or cause and effect, and explaining them in a coherent manner. Fifth, regarding question and answer: concerning some points in the treatise that students find difficult to understand, questions or doubts should be raised from within, such as "Are these not contradictory?" or "How is it so?" Then, by explaining their answers in a way that does not contradict scripture and reasoning, contradictions are eliminated, and the meaning of the treatise is sought out and established. 33 Third, regarding the manner of explanation: For those of great intellect, profound and extensive; for those of small intellect, easy to grasp. Easy to understand, later subtle and detailed, cutting through contradiction and connection. For the disheartened, uplift their spirits; counter excitement and dullness. For students whose faculties are sharp and wisdom is great, words should be explained profoundly and with good connection, and the meaning deeply and extensively. For those whose faculties are dull and intellect is small, words should be explained in an easy-to-grasp and comprehensible way, and the meaning in an easy-to-understand and pleasing-to-the-ear manner. Later, when they are somewhat connected to words and meaning and able to investigate, the subtle and detailed subject matter should be taught, and the contradictions and connections of words and meaning should be explained. For those with dull intellect and who are old, and those with short life, etc., who are unable to hear and meditate, or even if able, feel discouraged thinking they don't have time, stories like that of Āryapathabrtan should be told. Furthermore: Though one dies tomorrow, one should still study. Even if one does not become learned in this life, What is entrusted for a future birth Is like taking one's own wealth.

Make them recall what has been said and so forth, and praise them. For those who are attached to the affairs of this life, whose minds are distracted and reckless due to the qualities of desirable objects, one should speak of impermanence, the disadvantages of sensual pleasures, the fears of lower realms, and so forth, thereby turning their minds towards the Dharma. For those who are overcome by drowsiness, sleepiness, and so forth, one should appropriately narrate wondrous stories and the various faults of drowsiness and sleepiness, thereby turning them away from these faults. Jha 2. Secondly, the manner in which students should respectfully listen: Abandon the three faults of the vessel, the six defilements, and so forth; Maintain the perception of a patient towards medicine and a doctor. Moreover, the Sutras state: "Listen well, listen thoroughly, and hold it in your mind, and I will explain it to you." The meaning of this is to listen by abandoning the three faults of the vessel. "Listen well" means abandoning the fault of a vessel turned upside down. Just as liquid cannot enter a vessel turned upside down, when listening to the Dharma, if one has no aspiration for the meaning of the Dharma, if the mind is distracted by objects, if one is overcome by drowsiness and sleepiness, thereby having a withdrawn mind and not lending an ear to the Dharma, one should abandon these and listen. This is the meaning. "Listen thoroughly" means abandoning the fault of a vessel with defilements. Just as pouring liquid into a defiled vessel is of no benefit, if one listens to the Dharma with a mind tainted by the defilements of afflictions, it will be of no benefit to one's own or others' mental continuums. Therefore, one should abandon thoughts of afflictions such as arrogance and lack of faith, and then listen. This is the meaning. "Listen while holding it in your mind" means abandoning the fault of a vessel with a cracked bottom. Just as liquid cannot remain in a vessel with a cracked bottom, if one becomes weary of listening to the Dharma and does not pay close attention to the words and meanings, it will be of no benefit. Therefore, one should abandon the weariness of being unable to exert effort and listen diligently. This is the meaning. The six defilements are, according to the *Vibhāṣā* (Commentary on Logic): Arrogance and indeed disbelief, And the absence of seeking meaning, External distraction, withdrawn mind, Listening with weariness is defilement. As explained. These are included within the three faults of the vessel, and so forth, the precepts of what to abandon and what to adopt. Furthermore, from that same source (the *Vibhāṣā*), it speaks of listening to the Dharma in sixteen ways as an antidote to thirteen faults, and the fault of karma, lack of faith, not making offerings, intention, and...
