The six faults of discordance and attachment. It is also said that the latter two each contain five subdivisions. When listening to the Dharma, as taught through various examples in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra (or 'Tree Array Sūtra'): one should consider oneself as a patient, the Dharma as medicine, and the lama as a doctor; or again, oneself as a guest, the Dharma as a boat, and the lama as a host/boatman; or again, oneself as unfamiliar with the way, the Dharma as a mount, and the lama as a guide, and listen with these perceptions firmly established. Third, both should practice the six perfections: both should practice embodying the six perfections. Both the Dharma explainer and the listener, during the explanation and listening, should possess the six pāramitās: generosity, such as offering the words of Dharma and making offerings for that purpose; morality, avoiding discordance in listening and explaining; patience, not growing weary of the physical and verbal hardships; diligence, finding joy in listening and explaining; meditation, single-pointed concentration on the Dharma; and wisdom, discerning words and meanings. Thus, they should practice embodying the six pāramitās. Third, there are two post-activities: first, the activities of the master; second, the activities of the student. The first (activities of the master) is: afterwards, extensively offer forgiveness, dedication, and seal with emptiness. After the explanation and listening of the Dharma are concluded, there are three things the master should do: First, to request forgiveness for faults, saying: Being under the sway of mind, Whatever sins I have committed, Before the eyes of the Buddhas, I now confess all of them. (Page 17b) And so forth, making confession as appropriate. Second, dedicating the merit to enlightenment, such as “By this merit, may all become omniscient...”, or as spoken by the Noble Asanga: From explaining this supreme precious holy Dharma, Whatever immeasurable merit I have attained, By that, may all beings become, Stainless vessels of the supreme precious holy Dharma. And so forth, making pure dedications and aspirations. Third, sealing with non-referentiality, as stated in the Madhyamakāvatāra: The giver, the gift, and the recipient are empty; This is called the transcendent perfection. In this way, it is sealed by the wisdom that does not conceptually apprehend the three spheres (giver, gift, recipient). Second (activities of the student)

The duties of the student (Tibetan: པ་, meaning 'that, this') are: Students should rely on making offerings, dedication, aspiration, mindfulness, and wisdom. The duties required of a student are threefold: First, making offerings of gratitude. Remembering the kindness, one should appropriately prostrate and offer maṇḍalas (Tibetan: མཎྜལ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: मण्डल, Sanskrit Romanization: Maṇḍala, Chinese literal meaning:壇城) of gratitude. Second, dedicating merits towards enlightenment (Bodhi). This is explained similarly to before, converting the explanation into words that are heard. Third, maintaining the continuity of mindfulness and wisdom. One should remember the words and meaning of the Dharma, go to a secluded place, and abandon distractions, dullness, and so forth. The Dharma one has heard should be contemplated again and again, recited, and written down. All doubts should be asked to the Lama. After the Dharma is fully completed, one should please the Lama with offerings of gratitude. This should be done as stated in 'The Gateway to Engaging in Dharma'. Chapter 4: The benefits of teaching and listening, etc. Listening, contemplating, hearing, explaining, upholding, and practicing, The benefits of engaging in these alternately (or continuously) are endless. In general, the benefits of listening and contemplating are: From the *Lung Nam Jye* (Tibetan: ལུང་རྣམ་འབྱེད་, Sanskrit Romanization: Lung Nam Jye, meaning: Analytical Treatise), it states that there are five benefits to extensive hearing (learning): being skilled in aggregates (Skandhas), being skilled in elements (Dhātus), being skilled in sense fields (Āyatanas), being skilled in dependent origination (Pratītyasamutpāda), and having one's instructions (teachings) not dependent on others (i.e., gaining independent understanding). This is also extensively found in Jātaka tales and so on. Specifically, the benefits of hearing the Dharma are: From *Namshé Rigpa* (Tibetan: རྣམ་བཤད་རིགས་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: व्याख्यायुक्ति, Sanskrit Romanization: Vyākhyāyukti, meaning: Analytical Treatise on Explanation), the Bhagavān (Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་, Sanskrit Romanization: Bhagavān, Chinese literal meaning: Blessed One) taught five benefits of hearing the Dharma: what is heard will be heard (understood), what is heard will be thoroughly purified (understood well), doubts will be abandoned, views will be made correct, and profound words and meanings will be realized through wisdom. Thus it is stated. Generally, the benefits of hearing the Dharma are immeasurable, as stated in all Sūtras and Tantras. The benefits of explaining (Dharma) also include: becoming the supreme offering to the Buddhas, becoming the supreme gift to sentient beings, and merits will increase and clairvoyance (Abhijñā) will be attained—these three. Furthermore, there are twenty benefits of Dharma generosity, as explained in the *Sūtra Calling Forth Superior Intention* (Tibetan: ལྷག་པའི་བསམ་པ་བསྐུལ་བའི་མདོ་, Sanskrit Romanization: Adhyāśayasamcodana Sūtra, Chinese literal meaning: 劝发增上意乐经), and so on, which are very numerous. The benefits of upholding the Dharma are: From 'The Teaching of the Tathāgata's Secret' (*Tathāgataguhya-nirdeśa* or similar), it states: The merit of upholding the sacred Dharma is, By all Buddhas diligently...
