And, the basis (zhi), although generally referring to five meanings, here means the cause: the three mental non-virtues. That which is included (bcas pa) means mutual inclusion. In short, all seven categories of Pratimoksha vows accomplish the abandonment of the ten non-virtues. That which is accompanied by associates (mtshungs ldan dang bcas pa) means: Since intention is primary, those associated with it also become vows, as stated in Karma Shingta. The seven abandonments of physical and verbal harm to others. The basis (zhi) means that which is accompanied by its retinue. Therefore, by abandoning what should be abandoned, which is part of that. In short, the definition of liberation vows is the moral discipline that abandons merely the physical and verbal faults. From the Abhidharmakosha-bhashya: "Because it restrains body and speech, it is also called the individual liberation vow." This meaning appears to be commonly held by the masters of the treatises. Therefore, it seems good to consider the former system primarily as Mahayana Pratimoksha and the latter as the definition of Sravaka Pratimoksha. Nya 3 The third, [Views/Assertions] are: The Vaibhashikas assert it to be material form. This means: by stating the main (aspect), the incidental (aspects) are also understood. The Vaibhashikas (assert that): The essence of the vow is a material form included within either 'revealing' (vijñapti) or 'non-revealing' (avijñapti). It connects the person and the attainment like a rope. The Sautrantikas (assert that): It is a special transformation of the mental continuum. The Cittamātrins (assert that): It is a continuous mental intention with seeds that abandons improper conduct. The Rangtong Madhyamikas (assert that): It is the intention of abandoning, accompanied by its associates. In short, from the Sautrantikas upwards, it is commonly asserted that the intention of definite emergence is the substantial cause, and manifest phenomena, etc., serve as cooperative conditions, giving rise to the nature of consciousness. Since this is difficult to understand, I will elaborate a little: Firstly, the first moment of the Pratimoksha vow, correctly taken, relies on the 'revealing action' (vijñapti) of others such as the preceptor and master, and arises in the nature of both 'revealing' and 'non-revealing' forms. From the second moment onwards, until the cause for abandoning the vow arises, it abides in the mental continuum in the nature of 'non-revealing form'. Within that vow, the seven material 'paths of action' (karma-patha), such as abandoning killing, also, according to that reasoning, in the first moment are both (revealing and non-revealing), and from the second moment onwards, exist as non-revealing form. The first moment... (text incomplete)

"Oh, having considered that, both exist." Second, through the preeminence of the three respective actions, the mind repeatedly arises with thoughts such as "I am a lay practitioner" or "I am a novice monk." The subsequent moment of consciousness arising from the preceding moment in the mental continuum is a complete transformation. This alone is considered the essence of the vows. Third, the Yogacara school maintains the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness). Therefore, they assert that the physical actions such as observing vows are also a continuum of mind. If the essence of the vows were solely mental volition, then it would be interrupted during periods of distraction or unconsciousness. If it were based solely on imprints (vasanas), then when the occasion to abandon arises, it would not be abandoned. Therefore, the essence (of the vows) is considered to be the continuum of mental volition that abandons negative actions, along with the imprints (vasanas) established in the alaya-vijnana. Fourth, the Rangtong school does not accept the alaya-vijnana. Therefore, they consider the essence (of the vows) to be the mental volition that abandons negative actions, along with its concomitant factors. Chandrakirti, in his *Madhyamaka Pancaskandha*, presented it as unmanifest form (avijnapti-rupa). And eminent masters such as Drigungpa and Taktsang Lotsawa (Sherab Rinchen) also elucidated it in this emphasized manner. In summary, most views generally agree that the vows, encompassed by the intention of renunciation and involving the abandonment of misconduct, which are the Pratimoksha precepts, and the vows subsumed under the desire realm (Kama-dhatu), are mostly considered to be of a material (rupa) nature. Second, the meaning of the terms: Ethical discipline, good conduct, action, and restraint. Generally, Pratimoksha (Tibetan: པྲ་ཏི་མོཀྵ་, Sanskrit: Prātimokṣa, Romanized: Prātimokṣa, literal meaning: Individual Liberation) is so called because it causes each individual to be liberated from samsara (20b). This liberation vow brings coolness from the heat of afflictions and makes the conduct of the three doors (body, speech, and mind) virtuous, hence it is called Shila (Tibetan: ཤཱི་ལ་, Sanskrit: Śīla, Romanized: Śīla, literal meaning: Ethical Discipline). Because it is a ground praised by the wise, it is called good conduct. Because it is by nature an action, it is called action. And because it acts as a dike to prevent wrong conduct, or because it perfectly restrains body and speech, it is explicitly expressed by names such as restraint. Third, there are two types of classification: 1. General classification based on bhumi (ground/level); 2. Specific classification based on support. 1. The first is: Pratimoksha, Dhyana, and Uncontaminated, are all subsumed under Bhumi. These vows are also classified as: the Pratimoksha vows subsumed under the desire realm (Kama-dhatu); the Dhyana vows subsumed under the form realm (Rupa-dhatu); and the uncontaminated vows, which transcend the three realms (Triloka) and are subsumed under the noble ground (Aryabhumi). All are subsumed under bhumi.
