There are three. Firstly, the discipline (tshul khrims) of those in this Dharma who have abandoned unwholesome actions pertaining to the desire realm. Secondly, the discipline obtained through meditative absorption (ting 'dzin) pertaining to the form realm. Thirdly, the discipline obtained through uncontaminated wisdom (zag med kyi shes rab) transcending the mundane world. According to the Vaibhashika school, these three are substantively contradictory and are not simultaneously present in a single mental continuum. According to the Mahayana school, the vows (sdom pa) in the continuum of a Mahayana Arya (noble one) are, in sequence, the abandonment of unwholesome actions, encompassed by actual dhyana (samtan dngos gzhi), and the essence of the path of Arya; thus, these three (e.g., pratimoksha vows) are not contradictory and are considered to coexist. Second, [the differentiation based on the support/basis]: Bhikshu, Shramanera, Upasaka, two sexes (male and female), Shikshamana, upavasatha, eight categories, substantively four. Those endowed with the characteristics are only seven categories. If differentiated by basis, there are: two sexes of Bhikshus (male and female); two sexes of Shramaneras (male and female); two sexes of Upasakas (male and female); and Shikshamana, making seven categories. Alternatively, by separately extracting the upavasatha from the Upasakas/Upasikas, there are eight categories. If these are gathered into distinct essences or substances, there are: Bhikshu, Shramanera, which are two aspects of the renunciant path; Upasaka, Upavasatha, which are two aspects of the householder path. In total, they are subsumed into four. Among these, those endowed with the characteristics of Pratimoksha are exclusively seven categories. Regarding these, there appear to be two views: one asserts seven categories excluding the upavasatha; and another asserts seven categories excluding the Shikshamana, because the Shikshamana is not applicable for a lifetime or a day and night. Fourth, explaining the method of obtaining what has not been obtained, there are four points: 1. Classification of rituals; 2. The basis for rebirth/ordination; 3. Being free from adverse conditions and obstacles; 4. Completing the conducive conditions and rituals. Firstly, The rituals for obtaining are those of the past and the present. For the ritual of obtaining vows that have not been obtained, there are two: the former ritual, which is accomplished with little effort; and the present ritual, which is accomplished with effort. Regarding the former rituals, the Vaibhashika masters explained them in ten ways: the fully enlightened Buddhas and Pratyekabuddhas both attained awakening spontaneously by knowing that defilements are exhausted and will not arise again; the five good companions (the five bhikshus) attained it through comprehension of wisdom when the path of seeing arose; Shariputra (incomplete)

By 'Ehi Bhikkhu' (Come, monk!), and so on; because Mahākāśyapa made a promise before the Teacher; because the sixty of the Bhadravarga made a vow to the Three Jewels; because Prajāpatī and others made a vow to abandon the eight heavy dharmas (a set of rules for nuns); because of being pleased with the answer to the question asked by Sudatta (Anathapindika); for the offerings made by the mother and father who had come under the influence of offerings, the bhikṣuṇī Utpalā acted as a messenger, and by relying on the Kamma (formal act) of the monastic assembly; those who simultaneously perform renunciation and full ordination by means of the four-part formal act, with a minimum number of ten monastics in the central land and five in the border regions. These are the venerable ones (mkhan po, abbot) (21b). The three obscurations of karma, afflictions, and karmic ripening in the disciples are few, and they arise in the continuum of pure-minded disciples whose three faculties (wisdom, continuum, and senses) are matured. However, based on the later arrangement, that former ritual should not be performed. The four-part formal act and its retinue, established after the former rituals, which is to be performed from the time the Teacher passed away until now, is the current ritual. It can be accomplished by an assembly of ten in the central land and an assembly of five in the border regions. Regarding the distinction between central land and border regions: coarsely speaking, if based on geographical location, the noble land (Ancient India) is the central land, and all others are considered border regions. If distinguished by the Dharma perspective, where the teaching of scripture and realization abides, that is the central land, and conversely, it is the border region. 2. The second, support (or basis): The support (basis) for men and women born in the three continents. It is asserted that for the basis by which any of the eight liberation vows are taken, they do not arise in any being other than men and women born in the three continents. In the Root Sūtra, it states: 'Non-human beings and those in the northern continent of Uttarakuru are not fields for vows.' Therefore, it is also taught that even eunuchs and hermaphrodites do not have the natural capacity for vows to arise. The Sautrāntikas hold that the Upavāsa (fasting vows) can also arise in animals and so forth. In the Vinaya scripture, it is taught that the young Nāga Tsampo observed the Upavāsa on the eighth day. And in the Jātaka Tales, it is taught that the four (beings) such as the Sriga bird observed the Upavāsa, and this is accepted literally. 3. The third, [freedom from adverse conditions and obstacles], is: Free from the five certainties and the four obstacles. This is to be preserved in a place where conducive conditions are complete. Otherwise, it is like a place where it cannot be preserved. (Refers to) year or month.
