Object, Continuum, Marks, Intention, and Ritual; these are the five. First: Existing in the realm of faith in the Three Jewels, and there being an actual bhikṣu conferring the vows. Second: The continuum not being incomplete in the assembly, the former vows not obstructing the continuum, and the preceding phrases (stages) having been completed. Third: Abandoning the marks of a householder; possessing the appearance of a renunciant through the three marks of physical purification, robes, and utensils. Fourth: The causal motivation is the desire to obtain (the vows), the contemporaneous motivation is the knowledge of obtaining (the vows); being free from the five adverse conditions, possessing the three perfect conducive conditions; all of these being endowed with the intention of definite emergence (renunciation). Fifth: Making refuge the initiating factor, and reciting the mantra-phrase three times for the accomplishment of the novice vows. As for a bhikṣu who has completed the third stage of full ordination, generally, ten manifest (conditions) must be complete: Of these, the first is the manifest Buddha, which is the display of a blessed Buddha statue. Second is the manifest Dharma, which means the Dharma understood by those performing the ritual as diligent practice of the precepts, and the actual existence of the ritual procedures, thereby fulfilling the meaning of the scriptural Dharma. Third is the manifest Sangha, which means the number is complete, endowed with the Dharma of supplementation, and free from two disharmonious factors; thus possessing three characteristics. Of these, the first is: the completeness of the assembly, meaning four (bhikṣus) are complete, excluding the preceptor. Second is (exclusion of those who are): standing rather than sitting; those whose conduct (e.g., breaking vows) is such that they are subject to karmic action; those who are not physically present but offer their intention, etc.; those who are not fully ordained; those whose vows are damaged; those who have committed immediate heinous crimes; those with wrong views who believe that drinking alcohol, etc., is not sinful; those who reside in different territories (e.g., in disagreement); those who are deluded like the insane, etc.; those who reside in different boundaries rather than in a single boundary; those of different gender, like bhikṣuṇīs; those who hold other Three Jewels. It is necessary that they are not any of these. Third is: being free from two disharmonious factors: those who are not actually present in the assembly due to offering their intention, etc., and those who are present but later withdraw. Fourth is the manifest preceptor, meaning the preceptor generally possesses perfect qualities of stability and erudition, and specifically, from the perspective of the one to be ordained, is free from the three faults of seeing, hearing, and doubt.

Fifth, the manifest guru (preceptor) is present. This refers to the karma-acharya (karma master) who is skilled in transmitting the ritual procedures within the monastic community, and the secret preceptor (secret instructor) who is skilled in secretly inquiring about obstacles and making internal requests, free from the four hindrances of beings due to desire, fear, hatred, and ignorance. The meaning of these four types of beings refers to: regarding the object of accomplishment, there is joy, fear, disharmony, and not knowing whether there are obstacles. If the aspiring one and the secret preceptor are friends, even if there are obstacles, they will keep it secret and not speak; if they are afraid, they will not dare to speak; if there is disharmony, they will speak falsely; and if they are ignorant, the fault of not comprehending will occur. Sixth, the manifest aspirant for full ordination is present. This refers to one who genuinely desires to receive it, possesses renunciation; is twenty years old, capable of speech, understanding of meaning, and naturally stable; does not harbor disharmonious thoughts; is free from the five certainties (p. 24), and whose continuum is not incomplete (in terms of physical and mental aggregates). Seventh, the manifest requisites are present. This refers to the completion of the five requisites: the three monastic robes are of standard size, or the material is acceptable, and they are long enough for more than one cubit; a suitable and standard begging bowl, a sitting mat, and a water strainer are included. Eighth, the manifest purity is present. This refers to not possessing the four obstructing dharmas (hindrances) and so forth. Ninth, the manifest request (karma-vachana) is present. This refers to making a request to the monastic community three times. Tenth, the manifest karma (act) is present. This refers to the complete, correct, and unconfused ritual procedures of the four-part karma (karma-vachana and three karma acts). Specifically, (ordination) is encompassed by three actions: preparation, main part, and conclusion. First, the manifest preparation refers to the preceding nine (manifestations). Then, the main part involves performing the karma-vachana (request) and, through attachment (to the precepts), receiving full ordination from the monastic community. After that, in order to know what is to be revered and what is not, the time of attaining the boundary of the precepts is explained. In order to prevent the acquired (precepts) from diminishing and to make them grow, nine precepts are taught to the recipient, and two admonitions are given to the instructor, completing eleven admonitions. Regarding the ritual for women to become Upasikas (laywomen) and Shikshamana (novice nuns), it is like the male ritual, but the name of the aspiring one must be changed and additional questions added. Thereafter, if unmarried, at eighteen years old, and if married, at ten years old, in the central land (of Buddhism), twelve bhiksunis (nuns), and in the frontier regions, six bhiksunis, confer the Shikshamana precepts through a karma-vachana (request) and two karma acts. After that, if married...
