One might renounce (the action) only for a moment. Thinking, "I cannot uphold this beyond that," this is like a *certainty of time*; thinking, "I will uphold (the vows) only when there are no disputes, but not otherwise," this is like a *certainty of circumstance*; thinking, "I will not take the life of other beings, except for enemies," this is like a *certainty of sentient beings*; thinking, "I can uphold some coarse instructions, but not the subtle ones (22na)," this is like a *certainty of precepts*. These are the five certainties (Nges Pa Nga). By being free from these five certainties, one obtains the Pratimoksha vows. Furthermore, a fully ordained monk (bhikshu) must be free from the five certainties. A novice monk (shramanera) also requires similar (freedom). If one possesses these five certainties, one cannot obtain the vows, but it can still become a virtuous act. Furthermore, one must also be free from other impediments: the impediments of birth, such as being a hermaphrodite or having committed an act of immediate retribution (Anantarika-karma), etc.; the impediments of abiding, such as not having permission from the king or parents, etc.; the impediments of special transformation, such as being unable to drive away crows, or being afflicted by illness and suffering, etc.; and the four impediments to adornment, such as having yellow hair or severed ears, etc. One must also be free from these (four types of) impediments. However, these specific impediments are not definitive for the two types of vows held by householders. 24. The fourth [accomplishment of the ritual assembly of conducive conditions] has two parts: (1) temporary vows, and (2) permanent vows. 1. The first is: For one who has not gone for refuge, there are no liberation vows. Received from one possessing the Upasaka vows, with a limit of one day and one night. From the *Abhidharmakosha*: Though all vows exist, They do not exist for one who has not gone for refuge. Therefore, since those who have not first gone for refuge to the Three Jewels do not possess the Pratimoksha vows, represented by the Upasaka vows, it is necessary to first take the refuge vows. The object of reception (preceptor): The Vaibhashikas assert that all eight classes (of vows) must be received from a fully ordained monk (bhikshu); The Sautrantikas, however, assert that the Upasaka vows can be received from anyone who is a qualified Upasaka or higher. In the *Gnas 'jog gi mdo* (Sutra on Establishing Abodes) it is stated: "Sit before any bhikshu, brahmin, householder, or renunciant who knows the ritual," and, In the *Vibhanga* (section of the Vinaya), it is stated that the householder Anathapindika conferred Upasaka vows upon many people. In any case, it is generally agreed that one receives (the vows) from a person possessing the Upasaka vows before sunrise today, and upholds them until sunrise tomorrow, making it a limit of one day and one night. However, specifically, even if one initially promises before the master (acarya) to observe (the vows) on the full moon, new moon, and eighth days of every month (22b), one still needs to receive them anew at each subsequent time of observance.

Regarding the necessity of taking them all at once previously: According to the Vaibhāṣikas, the vows arise even if taken after having eaten food. According to the Sautrāntikas, it is asserted that they arise even if one takes them oneself in the presence of the support (the preceptor or assembly). Moreover, this (method of arising) seems to be considered of lesser significance than the formal recipient (the preceptor/assembly), and the repetition of the imitation three times constitutes the main part of the ritual. T.2. The second [Permanent Rules] are: For Upāsakas and such, by their respective rituals, For Śrāmaṇeras and Bhikṣus, ten manifest (or fully qualified) individuals are required. The three phrases "Upāsaka and so forth" are to be accomplished through rituals that fulfill the conducive conditions according to their respective traditions. Furthermore, the later stages of precepts cannot be performed without the preceding stages having been completed beforehand. Those who wish to take only the vows of Upāsaka and Śrāmaṇera will have the rituals for those specifically extracted and the vows conferred. Here, if we consider the three stages of sequential acceptance: For the first stage, Upāsaka, there are two types: temporary (such as practicing one aspect) and complete. For one to become an Upāsaka, distinguished by the eight categories, one must uphold the five training rules, thereby requiring the taking of the complete Upāsaka vows. Therefore, the Bhikṣu who is qualified as a preceptor for renunciation (ordination) inquires about obstacles in order to determine whether renunciation is appropriate or not. The main part (of the ritual) is accomplished by taking refuge and affirming oneself as an Upāsaka. Finally, the precepts are undertaken by accepting them. For those with temporary vows, merely adding to that (the core commitment) is sufficient, and there is no need to inquire about obstacles for those who do not undertake full renunciation, which is the distinction. For the second stage, Śrāmaṇera: The preparatory (or intermediate) ritual for renunciation is as follows: The Upāsaka himself, through the officiant (Karmācārya), is questioned about obstacles. If found pure (free from obstacles), he requests renunciation from the Saṅgha (assembly of monks). If granted, he makes a supplication to the preceptor. After performing the three changes (of signs, name, and intention), the preceptor establishes him as an intermediate renunciant (23na). The main part of the ritual is then entrusted by the preceptor to an officiant Bhikṣu. That (officiant Bhikṣu) ensures that the candidate is free from the four adverse conditions and obstacles, and possesses the five conducive conditions. By taking refuge as the initiating act, he is established as a Śrāmaṇera. Afterward: Another Bhikṣu measures the shadow (to determine the time) and announces the moment the Śrāmaṇera vows were attained. The ācārya (teacher) then has him accept the ten training rules of a Śrāmaṇera. Regarding the five conducive conditions, they are:
