(If) not yet twelve years old, if not maintained, upon reaching twenty years old, the number of bhikshunis in the sangha is the same as before, and the preceptor bestows the five robes, including the sweat-cloth (saṃkakṣikā) and the arm-cut (kaṇṭhaccheda), as a sign. After inquiring about hindrances, the vows of a brahmacarya upasaka (novice celibate) are bestowed. Then, the assembly of male monastics is added, and with both (male and female) sanghas, one becomes fully ordained. (page 24b) Subsequently, when reciting the exhortations, although there is a need to subtract or add things like the eight parajikas (defeats) and the eight heavy dharmas (Gurudharma), in this land of Tibet, the tradition of establishing female novices (sramaṇerika) and bhikshunis has never existed from the beginning. J5. The fifth (chapter) on expounding the precepts for not losing what has been attained, has two parts: N1. General explanation, and N2. Individual explanation. N1. The first is: Relying on others, mind pure, knowing the discordant. Thoroughly purifying precepts, protecting by conditions of comfortable abiding. Generally, there are five methods for protecting the precepts: Protecting by relying on others, that is: relying on the oral instructions of the learned and widely heard; relying on the exemplary practices of the venerable ones. Especially, after full ordination, one must rely on the preceptor (acharya) of the place (where one resides); a brief explanation will be given below. Protecting by purifying one's own mind or intention, that is: diligence in eagerly engaging in what should be adopted and abandoning what should be rejected; mindfulness in being cautious about what to engage in and what to refrain from; recollection and introspection to examine one's own mind-stream; not being separated from knowing shame with respect to others and having moral rectitude with respect to oneself. Protecting by knowing what is discordant, that is: knowing the causes for abandoning vows; knowing the causes for degeneration (of vows); knowing the conditions for maintaining (vows); and knowing the causes that hinder great faith in the mind. In short, it is by studying and engaging in hearing and contemplating the Vinaya Pitaka. Protecting by thoroughly purifying the precepts, that is: by not abandoning the practices of the three foundations (posadha, pravaraṇā, varsa). Protecting by cultivating the conditions for comfortable abiding, that is: the thirty-six downfalls related to robes; twenty-two (downfalls) related to food; three (downfalls) related to utensils; ten (downfalls) related to dwelling places — these should be abandoned and protected against. The main causes for faults arising are: ignorance, disrespect, heedlessness, and abundant defilements. Therefore, by relying on these five methods of protection as antidotes, one should strive to protect the precepts as if they were the apple of one's eye. (page 25a) N2. The second, individual explanation, also has two parts: T1. Those belonging to the householder's side...
