Regarding these four, according to the Vaibhashikas (བྱེ་བྲག་ཏུ་སྨྲ་བ་): When taking the vows, one pledges merely as an Upasaka (དགེ་བསྙེན་), and subsequently, when observing, one practices whichever single-part vow (སྣ་གཅིག་) or others one desires. This is their view. According to the Sautrantikas (མདོ་སྡེ་པ་): When taking the vows, one must explicitly state what one pledges to observe, such as "May I be held as an Upasaka observing a single-part vow," and one must observe it as pledged. Otherwise, if one takes the complete vows (ཡོངས་རྫོགས་) and later fails to observe them accordingly, it leads to transgression (ཚུལ་འཆལ་). This is their view. They also assert the celibate Upasaka (ཚངས་སྤྱོད་དགེ་བསྙེན་), who abstains from unchaste conduct in addition to observing the complete Upasaka vows: Even if adorned with ornaments, one practices the Dharma. And so forth. Furthermore: In the *Sutra of Displaying Miracles* (ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་བསྟན་པའི་མདོ་), both this (celibate Upasaka) and Goma's Upasaka (གོ་མཱིའི་དགེ་བསྙེན་) are clearly taught. These two are not householders (ཁྱིམ་པ་) because they have renounced married life, nor do they belong to the monastic order (རབ་བྱུང་) because they have not taken the monastic signs. If an Upasaka endowed with vows (དགེ་བསྙེན་གྱི་སྡོམ་ལྡན་) enters the tantric path (སྔགས་ལ་ཞུགས་པ་), except for certain solitary monastic signs (རབ་བྱུང་གི་རྟགས་) and ritual actions (ལས་ཀྱི་ཆོ་ག་) such as afternoon food (26b), all other precepts must be studied according to the Vinaya basket (འདུལ་བའི་སྡེ་སྣོད་), as stated in the *Dpung Zang* (དཔུང་བཟང་). T2 The second part, the precepts pertaining to monastics, has three subdivisions: T1 precepts for male and female novices (དགེ་ཚུལ་ཕ་མ), T2 precepts for probationer nuns (དགེ་སློབ་མ་), and T3 precepts for male and female fully ordained monastics (དགེ་སློང་ཕ་མའི་བསླབ་བྱའོ). T1 The first is: Novice vows: eight branches plus abstaining from gold and silver, Ten are transgressions, similar to Bhikshus; Thirteen blameless precepts to be observed, and so on. The novice precepts include actual transgressions and those similar to prohibited acts. Among those transgressed upon taking monastic vows, there are three categories of similar acts. The first is: the eight branches explained in the context of the Sojong (བསྙེན་གནས་) vows, differentiating between singing and dancing, garlands, and so on. In addition to these, abstaining from accepting gold and silver makes ten gross transgressions. This is primarily taught with those in mind who are discouraged by hearing about many precepts. Although the four root downfalls (རྩ་བ་བཞི་) are similar to those of Bhikshus, here, transgressions such as killing animals (དུད་འགྲོ་གསོད་པ) which falls under taking life (སྲོག་གཅོད་ཀྱི་ཆར་གཏོགས་), and using grass and water containing living beings (སྲོག་ཆགས་བཅས་པའི་རྩྭ་དང་ཆུར་སྤྱོད་པ་), are three of the six expiable transgressions (བཤགས་བྱའི་ཉེས་བྱས) which include drinking alcohol (ཆང་འཐུང་བ་). If differentiated more finely, there are thirty-three From the four root downfalls: killing animals which is part of taking life, and using grass and water with living beings, these three...

The calumny of minor baseless transgressions; causing schism in the Sangha; siding with their faction; reviling householders; knowingly speaking falsehoods; mocking in the presence of teachers; mocking attendants; calumny of teaching Dharma for a small amount of food; calumny of residual transgressions; abandoning training out of contempt; covering rice to obtain leftovers—these are twelve. Thus, the four root (transgressions) and their fifteen branches, totaling nineteen. Alcohol; the three of dancing and so forth; the three of garlands and so forth; large, high beds and so forth are counted separately, and adding (27 verso) afternoon food, and accepting gold and silver, makes thirty. With the three deteriorations, it totals thirty-three Pratimokṣa vows. There are also other ways of explaining this. Second, with the exception of those that are permitted and blameless, all the transgressions of a bhikṣu also become secondary offenses (duskṛta) of a similar nature for a śrāmaṇera. These can be purified merely by mentally restraining oneself, without needing to depend on a confessional object. Third, it is the deterioration from these three: abandoning the signs of a householder, adopting the signs of a renunciant, and respectfully accepting an abbot. These three are also the causes for renouncing monasticism. Because it is taught that even by genuinely abandoning the signs of a householder for just one day, one thereby gives up monasticism. Therefore, as extensively explained in the "Three Hundred Verses," similar (precepts) should be observed like those of bhikṣus. As for those permitted and blameless for a śrāmaṇera, there are thirteen, and from the context of "etcetera," the six concordant ones said to be added by Tibetan Vinaya holders, these nineteen are blameless. Among these, the thirteen blameless ones are: Holding robes and begging bowl, parting from them, digging the earth; Touching jewels, touching fire, abandoning food, climbing trees, cutting (trees); Eating without receiving, discarding green grass, discarding impure things; Eating stored food, and destroying seeds. The six are: setting aside for a month, storing (provisions), departing from the monastery, Changing intention without announcement, sleeping together without completion. These are them. Third, the second [Śikṣamāṇā] is: The Śikṣamāṇā has six root concordant (precepts). Upon having obtained the ten precepts of a śrāmaṇera, one takes the Śikṣamāṇā vows and trains in their precepts for two years. The Deva of Saga (said): One should not travel alone on the road, Across rivers...
