By way of illustration, claiming oneself to be a Buddha when one is not, and claiming to possess clairvoyance and signs of accomplishment, etc., when one does not, also fall into this category. By Sagai Lha: Herein are the five obscurations, Which people hear as dharma. When these are exhausted, it is deemed the guru's dharma. Thus, (this explains) longing for desire, ill-will, dullness-sloth, restlessness-regret, and doubt; these five obscurations are the nature or dharma of human beings. When they are exhausted, one attains the mind of the superior realm, which is the guru's state. If a bhikṣu with vows engages in any of these four and conceals it for even a single moment, it renders the remaining vows non-existent, thus it is a root downfall. Because the opposing factor destroys the antidote, rendering it powerless, it is called the four pārajikas (defeats), hence the section on pārajikas. Here, throughout (this text), although the introduction, disadvantages, results, intention, preparation, culmination, purification, absence of downfall, and instructions, etc., are all detailed, those endowed with intellectual prowess should study in detail from the works of the second Omniscient Buton Rinchen Drub (Bu-ston Chos-rje) of the contentious era; and the great Vinaya commentaries and other treatises by the Eighth Lord (Rje brgyad pa). Those whose intellect is not well-trained should consult the Vinaya commentary of Lochen Dharmaśrī (Lochen Dharma Shree), and the Three Vows (29na) by Pema Karpo (Pedkar Zhabs) and Karma, the Lord's nephew (Karma Wanwang), etc., for detailed understanding. They are not elaborated upon here. At this point, it is imperative to know that downfalls, depending on whether the four factors of basis, intention, preparation, and culmination are complete or incomplete, become primary downfalls, etc. For example, in the case of unchastity, if the basis (object) – any of the three types of orifices – is unimpaired; and the male organ is healthy and functional; the intention is without fear or shame and filled with attachment; the preparation involves a slight insertion; and the culmination is experiencing pleasure—if all these are complete, it is a primary pārajika. If any one of these factors is incomplete, it is a gross pārajika. Furthermore, depending on the number of factors, it can be light or heavy. For other pārajikas and remaining offenses, etc., the factors are also counted, and if any single factor is incomplete, in the case of a remaining offense, it is called a gross remaining offense. For other downfalls, if any single factor is incomplete, it is a transgression (naturally punishable offense). Merely thinking "I rely on this desire" is a transgression of that which should be restrained. And upon that intention, if one engages in that preparation, a primary pārajika... (text incomplete)
