Not to swim. Not to touch men, Nor to sit together with them. Not to conceal transgressions, Nor to marry them. These six root dharmas Are taught for the Siksamana (female probationer). And it is said: Not to receive gold or silver. Not to shave hair from secret parts. Not to dig earth. Not to cut green grass and so forth. Not to eat food not given. Not to eat stored-up food. These six concordant dharmas, Similarly, should be abandoned. Furthermore, it is taught that all the precepts of a Bhikkhuni, except for seven blameless ones, and those that are concordant with them, are to be observed. III. Explaining the Precepts of a Bhikkhu. [1. The Manner of Dwelling. 2. The Manner of Relying on the Resident Master. 3. The Actual Precepts.] 1. Firstly, the manner of dwelling is: for one who has just received the novice vows (Sramanera) and full ordination (Bhikkhu), until ten continuous years have not been completed since their full ordination, and until they have not yet acquired the “five groups” (pañcavarga)—meaning the two qualities of “steadfastness” and “skillfulness”—they should rely on a special resident master (Acharya) to correctly discern what to adopt and what to reject. If there is an Upadhyaya, then by virtue of being such, they are already the resident master, and thus there is no need to establish a new dwelling. If there is none, one should perform the ritual of dwelling with a suitable Bhikkhu as a master, and by dwelling together, at dawn on the second day, that very person becomes the resident master. Although it is permissible for many Bhikkhus to dwell in the retinue of one master, it is said that a novice (Sramanera) should not be placed with more than one. Furthermore, it is not permissible to dwell together for more than three nights; therefore, it is not called “dwelling together,” but rather “close attendance.” 2. The manner of relying on the resident master is: the dweller should not act without having requested permission from the master. Except for actions such as circumambulating nearby stupas, urinating and defecating, or traveling elsewhere for one day, and other explicitly stated temporal exceptions, all other actions should not be carried out independently, but should be requested from the master. And the master should also instruct in accordance with the Dharma through excellent guidance. One who dwells by reliance, enters

The cause of discernment is the arising of a perception that is independent of both the ground and its abiding. Third, there are two actual trainings: 1) The training of abstention; 2) The training of accomplishment. First (the training of abstention) has two parts: 1) The training for bhikshus; 2) The training for bhikshunis. First (the training for bhikshus) has two parts: 1) A brief explanation; 2) An elaborate explanation. First, the brief explanation: The five categories of downfalls in a bhikshu's discipline: The disciplines established for bhikshus are categorized into five downfalls: the Parajika category, the Sanghavashesha category, the Patayantika category, the Pratideshaniya category, and the Dushkrita category. Second, the elaborate explanation has five parts: from Parajika up to Dushkrita. First (Parajika) is: Sexual misconduct and taking what is not given, Taking life and lying about superhuman qualities are the Parajika category. If the basis, intention, and action are complete, it constitutes a defeat; If the constituent factors are incomplete, it is a grave offense, and so forth. Among these, the four sections of the Parajika category: The Parajika of sexual misconduct refers to inserting a gem into any of the three orifices (mouth, anus, urethra) of a male, female, eunuch, human, animal, etc., whether living or a corpse whose body is half-erect, and fully experiencing the pleasure arising from that contact. The Parajika of taking what is not given refers to oneself directly stealing an object of complete value belonging to another, or causing another to steal it. The measure of value: In India, it is four hundred cowries, which is equivalent to one-fourth of a Karshapana. This refers to stealing an object of equivalent value. In Tibet, during times of no famine, it was approximately one khar; during famine, approximately half a khar could also suffice. The main teaching is that the value should be calculated according to the prevailing local value in each region. (28b) The Parajika of taking life refers to killing a human, or an embryo (such as a kalala stage being) using weapons, poison, or mantras, or causing another to kill. As stated in the Abhidharmakosha: For a single purpose, such as war, All participants are considered equally responsible as the doer. The Parajika of lying about superhuman qualities refers to falsely claiming to have attained qualities that are not easily achievable for a human being, such as superior or master-like virtues, when one has not actually attained them. For example, claiming to have seen a deity when one has not.
