...at that time. Even if explained for kalpas, it would not be exhausted. And so forth, it is widely presented. In particular, the benefits of hearing and explaining the Dharma of the Mahayana are: at the foundational stage, it overcomes the virtues of the Hinayana; at the path stage, it purifies all obscurations without remainder; at the result stage, it attains complete Buddhahood. Such scriptures are extensively found. Practicing the realized Dharma (18b) is exceedingly superior to those virtues. It is said that even merely contemplating 'Dharma-no-self' and taking seven steps towards a monastery generates immeasurable merit. Being solely immersed in explanations devoid of practice is utterly meaningless, as the sutras extensively state the twenty faults, and so forth, of those who delight in speaking. Even if one engages in practices like discipline and meditative absorption without having heard the teachings, it is like a blind person entering a path. Therefore, possessing both is the supreme virtue: As stated in the *Mahayana Sutra-alamkara*: Thus, the meditation of a yogi is not meaningless. Thus, the teachings of the Sugata are not meaningless. If merely by hearing the meaning could be seen, then meditation would be meaningless. If without hearing, one could engage in meditation, then the teachings would be meaningless. As it is said. Therefore, it is taught that the virtues of alternating between explanation and practice are immeasurable: Arya Nagarjuna said: That which expands wisdom is hearing; If both contemplation and this exist, Then meditation will also arise excellently; Thereby, unsurpassed enlightenment will be attained. As it is said. This is the chapter explaining the characteristics of teachers and students, and the manner of teaching and hearing the Dharma. This is the commentary on the first chapter, explaining the characteristics of teachers and students, and the manner of teaching and hearing the Dharma. Chapter Two: Detailed Elucidation of the Pratimoksha Vows. 2. Chapter Two, the detailed elucidation of the Pratimoksha vows, has two parts: 1. General presentation of the Three Vows; 2. Specific explanation of the Pratimoksha itself. 1. The first is: The foundation of virtues, discipline has three types, Arhats, Bodhisattvas, and followers of the Victorious Ones. Pratimoksha, Bodhicitta...

Renowned as the vows of vidyadhara. What those who enter the tradition of our unequalled Teacher, the King of the Shakyas, should first learn, is the precious threefold moral discipline, the basis and support of all good qualities, established by the Teacher himself (page 19a): In the *Vajrasekhara Tantra*: If those become renunciates, Perfectly endowed with the three vows, Pratimoksha and bodhicitta, Is the very nature of a vidyadhara. Thus it is said, and: Remaining in the three vows, Is said to be the first purification. As it is said, this summarizes the essence of practice in the Buddha's teachings. Furthermore, Jowo Je Lha Chik (Atisha) said: The first vow is to follow the arhats. The intermediate vow is to follow the bodhisattvas of the past. The tantric vow is to follow the buddhas. As it is said, the Vinaya of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas, or it is popularly known as the Pratimoksha Vows, Bodhisattva Vows, and Vidyadhara Vows. C2 Second: [Explanation of the Specific Pratimoksha] has four parts. C1 General explanation of the Shravaka Pratimoksha. C2 Special differentiation of the Mahayana Pratimoksha. C3 Summary of their meaning. C4 Mentioning faults and good qualities. C1 The first has six parts. J1 Nature of the vows. J2 Meaning of the word. J3 Divisions. J4 How to obtain what has not been obtained. J5 How to preserve what has been obtained without decay. J6 Mentioning further meanings. J1 The first has three parts. N1 Basis of designation. N2 Definition. N3 Ways of asserting. N1 The first is: Shravaka Pratimoksha seeking one's own peace, Motivated by definite emergence. This means: The basis of designation for the Pratimoksha vows according to the Hinayana Shravaka tradition is the moral discipline motivated by the intention of seeking one's own peace, not merely for protection from fear or good wishes, but by the thought of definitely emerging from all of samsara. N2 Second: [Definition] is: Possessing the basis of harming others, Concomitant with the mind of abandoning. This means: its definition is the mind of abandoning, concomitant with the basis of harming others. Furthermore, harming others (page 19b) is non-virtuous actions of body and speech...
