becomes. T2 [Second, the thought of compassion is:] Two kinds of compassion. This means: Firstly, the compassion that wishes to place all sentient beings in great enlightenment. If that is absent, then the compassion that wishes to teach well and benefit (others), what is taught must be well understood, and without relying on material gain, such compassion in explanation is definitely necessary. Through this, one's own explanation becomes a path. If there is no wish to benefit and one relies on material gain etc., it becomes the fault of selling the Dharma. T3 [Third, having patience in application is:] By having the three kinds of patience. This means: Patience in not being discouraged by fatigue and hardship during teaching; patience with students asking questions; and patience with others debating and being able to answer. These three enable one to guide disciples. Thus, if one teaches with all these qualities complete, it will be pleasing and beautiful to the assembly of people, and will become a path. From the Mahayana-sutra-alamkara (Ornament of the Sutras): Thus, one with good wisdom, free from weariness, endowed with compassion; Widely renowned for good methods, possessing knowledge; A Bodhisattva who speaks excellently, Shines among beings like the sun through explanation. Thus it is said. N2 Second, there are two methods of explanation: T1 General explanation, T2 Specific differentiation. T1 The first is: Six doors of explanation, or... This means: In the Abhidharma-samuccaya (Compendium of Abhidharma), it is taught that explanation is done through "the object to be fully known, its meaning, its cause, fully knowing it, the fruit of knowing, excellently knowing it," these six; or through twelve doors of explanation, such as the summarized explanation (15na). In some treatises, explanation is done through three: "the purpose, the summarized meaning, and the literal meaning." In others, it is said that explanation is done through two meanings: general and specific parts. According to Chimpam: This is by presenting the meaning, explaining the treatise, and making these certain. The first means: Presenting the bare literal meaning of the treatise, determined by "the connection from which it originated, the purpose for which it was arranged, and the subject matter it teaches," these three. Through this, the student will grasp the excellent meaning of the Dharma. The second means: By identifying the specific basis through the context's connected arrangement, and explaining the distinctive qualities that clarify doubts. Through this, directly and implicitly, how it is taught...

This practice enables disciples to become skilled in language. The third point is: Although they may understand the meaning of the texts, it is possible they cannot refute others' arguments. Therefore, by presenting arguments from those who misunderstand the already explained content, claiming it to be contradictory, redundant, or irrelevant, and then providing answers that resolve their misconceptions; and by dispelling doubts from those who question the intended meaning of other scriptural and logical responses, disciples will gain a definite understanding of the textual meaning. This is what they hold. 2. The second point [specific differentiation] is: General and specific purposes, first expound. Summarized meaning possesses two merits, endowed with six qualities. Verbal meaning, agent, and action three, including sound and meaning. The two connections are easy to understand, and coherent. Refutations and answers are established by scripture and logic. This is the currently well-known method of exposition, as taught in the *Pramanavarttika* (Commentary on Logic). In this regard, first, by stating the purpose and meaning, listeners will be diligent in listening and comprehending, thus explaining the general benefit of hearing and expounding. Second, the specific connection between the dharma to be expounded and (15b) is first stated. Second, the summarized meaning has two parts: The summarized meaning of the verbal meaning is: The verbal meanings explicitly stated in this text are organized into clear sections. If there are necessary verbal meanings not found in this text but drawn from other texts through scripture and logic, which are easy to understand and remember, they are summarized and explained first. The summarized meaning of each individual part is: To bring the entire text from beginning to end into mind, and to individually establish the major summaries. The internal divisions should be made without contradiction. The divisions and collections of branches should be explained without confusion. Thus, while combining the main summarized meaning with the easily understandable specific meaning of the texts, it also possesses six qualities: clarity of words, ease of expression, conciseness of speech, rhythmic phrasing, and easy to grasp. In short, if one's exposition is easy for others to understand and pleasant to both parties' ears, then one is learned. Third, the meaning of words is: In Sanskrit, it is expounded through the three (aspects of) "agent, object, and action," and by means of added letters, etc.; In Tibetan, it is combined with the three (aspects of) "what is to be expounded, by whom it is expounded, and the action of how it is expounded"; And also, initially
