... Possessing the intelligence to distinguish true from false appearances in good teachings (8b) and in mistaken teachings; having a great aspiration for the Mahayana. If these three are complete, then the qualities of a virtuous spiritual friend are seen as qualities; if these three are not present, even if the spiritual friend possesses great qualities, they will be seen as faults. 3. Third, [A Suitable Vessel for Mantras]: A suitable vessel for mantras is one who is reverent towards the guru, Able to keep secrets, possessing great wisdom, and diligent in upholding samaya. One who is suitable to receive the ripenings and liberations of secret mantra is, in addition to the qualities just mentioned, extremely reverent towards the guru, able to keep secret the profound views and conducts, etc., free from doubt regarding the meaning of secret mantra and possessing a vast intellect that realizes it, and able to diligently exert oneself in upholding the samaya of abandonment and adoption, and in practice. These are all included to varying degrees. This is extensively explained in the *Samputa Tantra*, *Vyakhyatantra*, *Vajramala*, and so forth. From the Nyingma Tantra, the *Magical Net Tantra* (Gyu Thrul) states: "Worshipping the teacher, diligent and clear in realization, Samaya, mantras, and mudras, Undamaged, understood, and equipped with requisites." Therefore, by making offerings to the teacher, the guru, one progressively obtains empowerments; through diligent application of reverence and constant application, one does not neglect hearing and contemplation; one possesses an unerroneously clear discerning intellect regarding the view to be realized; one's root and branch samayas are not degenerated; one comprehends the meanings of mantras, mudras, and so forth; and one is endowed with the requisites of conducive conditions. These are presented as suitable vessels to be introduced to this path. 2. Second, an explanation of what is to be abandoned, including incidental points: Abandon faults, and embrace those endowed with faith and so forth. That which is contrary to the qualities of a disciple is endowed with faults and should be abandoned. As stated in the *Vinaya-Udbhaava*: Devoid of compassion, wrathful and cruel, Arrogant, uncontrolled, and distracted, Unsuitable, deluded, and indolent, Lacking affection for the lives of others, Greatly attached to others' possessions, The Guru should always abandon such. Furthermore, (9a) in the *Five Stages* it states: One who despises the Guru, is deceitful, and lacks faith, Who is arrogant due to mantras, and inflated by seeing scriptures, To one who lacks faith and whose empowerment is inferior, The stages of instruction should also not be taught.

As was said. For those with mixed faults and virtues, who possess faith and other qualities, and have earnest seeking (of the Dharma), even if they lack all the (excellent) characteristics, they should still be accepted. From the General Tantra, it states: The faculties of disciples are unimpaired, Especially those endowed with virtues, Those of noble lineage and free from illness, Those possessing faith and diligence are rare. Whoever has faith in the Three Jewels, And delights in the Mahayana tradition, Such fortunate sentient beings are great ones; These are generally included. For those who practice the Sugata's secret mantra, A disciple who is earnestly diligent, Even if they have an unattractive form, And lack virtues, but possess wisdom, Should be admitted by the wise. So it was said. Sixth, regarding how to rely (on a teacher), there are two parts: 1) Initially examining the connection, and 2) Then relying. The first part is: After examining the guru-disciple connection, which is like a precious jewel. As previously explained, among the assembly of guru and disciples, who are endowed with virtues like precious jewels, it is absolutely crucial to initially examine the connection between them, high and low. From the `Fifty Verses on the Guru` (Bla ma lnga bcu pa), it states: The Guru and the disciples, If the samaya is equally broken by both, The hero should first examine, The connection between the master and the disciple. So it was said. From the `Drop of Mahamudra` (Phyag chen thig le), it states: Such a Guru should diligently, Examine the disciple, like refining gold, A wise one discerning a precious jewel, Or as one would desire a beautiful maiden, So too should the disciple be examined. (9b) Therefore, everyone should diligently, Examine each other individually, If not so, faults will arise. As was said. Especially for a Secret Mantra Guru, if empowerment is given to just anyone without examining the disciple, then the unsuitable vessel will not be able to uphold the samaya, leading to ruin in both this life and the next, and the samaya being broken. One's own siddhis (accomplishments) will also be far off, and many faults such as hindrances from obstacles will arise. Similarly, if a disciple, without examining the characteristics of the Guru, receives empowerment from just anyone, they will be deceived by a false spiritual friend. Moreover, being unable to uphold the samaya, the root of siddhis will be severed, they will be led to a bad path, and precious human birth will be wasted, along with other such faults.
