Just as the definitive meaning of the tantra has been clarified by the Bodhisattva's commentary, it can be instilled in the minds of disciples; and because the limbs of samadhi reside in his mind, he is able to transfer realization in the form of blessings into the stream of disciples. Through the definiteness of mantra, one attains the first bhumi (stage), and such a person is called a 'Glorious Lama,' who is greatly superior even to an ordinary lama. Chapter 4: The way of engaging and disengaging that extends from this [topic] is: Abandon those who are flawed; as it is rare to find one endowed with all qualities, rely on those with many virtues. Those who contradict the aforementioned qualities are flawed individuals who are external to the Buddha's teachings and lack the qualities [of a lama]. Therefore, even if they have great fame and influence, discerning individuals should (7b) investigate. If they have previously established a connection with such a person as a lama, they should treat them with indifference. If no connection has been established, they should avoid relying on them from the outset and abandon them. Sakya Pandita said: ‘Even if it is a lama, if they do not act in accordance with the Buddha's teachings, one should disregard them.’ Thus he said. Furthermore, in the *Abbreviated Tantra* (Bsdus rgyud) it is stated: ‘Possessed of pride, overwhelmed by anger, abandoning samayas, greedy for possessions, and lacking learning. Seeking to deceive disciples, their minds have fallen from the supreme state of bliss, and they have not bestowed empowerments. Attached to wealth, heedless, with harsh words, and desiring sensual pleasures for the sake of the senses. Such a one is like hell itself; wise disciples, for the cause of perfect enlightenment, should abandon them.’ Through this example, and many others found in other texts, this principle should be understood and abandoned. As it is extremely rare to find one possessing all perfect qualities due to the circumstances of the times, even if such a one cannot be found, one should regard as a lama and rely upon one who has few faults and many virtues. From the *Ultimate Approach* (Don dam bznyen pa) it is said: ‘Due to the influence of the contentious era, faults and virtues are mixed in lamas. There is no one entirely free from wrongdoing in all aspects. Therefore, after thoroughly examining, (disciples) should rely on those with predominant virtues. Thus, disciples should rely upon them.’ As it is said. Chapter 5: Explaining the characteristics of the disciples who rely [on a lama], there are two parts: 1. Those to be relied upon; 2. Those to be abandoned (and their associated aspects). 1. The first part has three subsections: 1. Pratimoksha (individual liberation); 2. Bodhisattva; 3. Mantra (Vajrayana).

the suitable vessel. 1. Firstly: The suitable vessel for Pratimoksha vows, without obstacles. Being endowed with the vessel for Pratimoksha vows means needing to be free from the four opposing, conflicting, and obstructing factors of vows that will be explained, which are generally the basis for the arising of vows. Specifically, in the *Three Hundred Verses*, it states: Respectful to the master, with perfect morality, Constantly diligent in meditation and recitation, (8n) Firm and gentle, and endowed with patience, One should know that this is the one possessing the qualities for diligent perseverance in vows. That is to say, one should always be respectful to the abbot, and especially to the resident and teaching masters; be able to perfectly uphold morality by abandoning the four causes of transgressions; constantly strive in meditation (abandonment of distraction) and recitation (oral transmission); have an extremely firm mind, and a naturally gentle disposition and conduct; and be endowed with patience towards the master's instructions and harm from others. Such a person should be known to possess the qualities to diligently practice Pratimoksha vows without degradation. 2. Secondly [Bodhisattva]: One who becomes a vessel for Bodhisattva vows is endowed with faith, compassion, and wisdom; Patien in practicing extensive deeds, does not seek one's own peace, Is diligent, and delights in hearing about emptiness. To become a vessel for Bodhisattva vows means to have faith in the Mahayana Tripitaka and virtuous friends, to have compassion for sentient beings, to be endowed with wisdom that comprehends profound and vast meanings, to be able to practice extensive deeds such as the four means of gathering disciples and the six perfections without discouragement, not to seek only one's own attainment of peaceful liberation but to delight in liberating all sentient beings, to possess unceasing diligence, and to experience joy in one's mind upon hearing the meaning of profound emptiness. These are said to be the signs of awakened lineage. In the *Dashadharmaka Sutra*, it states: The lineage of wise Bodhisattvas, Is known from their signs. Just as fire is known from smoke, And water is known from water birds. Furthermore, in the *Four Hundred Verses*, it states: Impartial, wise, seeking truth, Is called a vessel for hearing the Dharma. This means being impartial without attachment to one's own system and aversion to others' systems.
