Regarding the master: endowed with the four branches of steadfastness, skill, venerability, and benefiting others. Steadfastness and skill can also be combined, or endowed with the twenty-one qualities of the five groups. This should be understood as explained in the Great Commentary on the Root Sutra and by Padkar Zhabs. Benefiting others is also explained to have twelve branches: As it is said, "Possessing compassion and patience like me." The Officiating Master (Acarya) is: one whose bhikshu vows are purely observed; whose lineage (or name) is concordant; whose view is concordant; possessing the three expressions (terms/discourse); whose body is in an ordinary state (5n); and whose spiritual ground (bhumi) is naturally present. Furthermore, skilled in bestowing vows based on these six qualities. The Secret Instructor (Acarya) is: skilled in inquiring about obstacles in addition to these six qualities. The Resident Teacher (Preceptor) is: capable of purifying the mental continuum of the disciples by bestowing the teachings of what to abandon and what to adopt, in addition to the characteristics of the abbot. The Reading Teacher is: possessing clear intelligence in the Three Baskets (Tripitaka) in addition to the master's teachings. Second, the Bodhisattva Vow Master (Acarya) is: from the Sutra-alamkara (Ornament of the Sutras): The spiritual friend is disciplined, tranquil, utterly peaceful, Possessing superior qualities, diligent, and rich in scripture. Clearly realized the ultimate truth, and skilled in articulation, Relying on the essence of love, having abandoned weariness. Thus, it is stated that one needs to possess ten qualities: Disciplines the wild horse of mind with the excellent bridle of ethical conduct training. (Disciplined) The mind dwells peacefully within by training in samadhi with mindfulness and introspection. (Tranquil) By relying on the calm abiding (shamatha) where the mind is pliable, the wisdom distinguishing the ultimate truth arises, thus utterly pacifying ignorance. (Utterly peaceful) Possessing qualities superior to, not inferior to or equal to, those of the disciples. (Superior qualities) Possessing stable enthusiasm and diligence for the welfare of others. (Diligent) Rich in scriptural transmission, having extensively heard the Three Baskets. (Rich in scripture) Clearly realized the ultimate nature of all phenomena by the power of hearing, contemplating, and meditating. (Clearly realized the ultimate truth) Possessing skill in explaining, articulating the stages of the path in accordance with the intellectual capacity of those to be trained. (Skilled in articulation) The essence of love, due to a pure motivation of teaching the Dharma with compassion, without seeking gain, honor, etc. (Essence of love) Should rely on having abandoned the weariness of patience, such as not tiring from repeatedly explaining and not getting angry. (Abandoned weariness) Furthermore, disciplined, tranquil, utterly peaceful, and realized the ultimate truth are the branches of realization. Rich in scripture is the branch of scripture. Superior qualities

The first two of these six dharmas are the qualities attained by oneself, and the remaining four (5b) are the qualities for benefiting others. One who possesses these qualities is called a Mahapurusha (great person). Furthermore, one possessing the twelve qualities of hearing and so forth is supreme. Beyond that, it is said that one endowed with the twelve qualities, such as extensive learning, is supreme. As the noble Nāgārjuna stated: With vast learning and great wisdom, Not seeking material gain, Possessing bodhicitta and great compassion, Enduring hardships and having little weariness, With profound instructions and liberated from paths, Skilled in lineage and knowing the signs of heat (spiritual realization), One should rely upon those endowed with these twelve. As thus stated. 23. Third, the Tantric (Vajra) Master is: The Vajra Master is stable, gentle, and wise, Patient, unwavering, knowing the practice of tantras and mantras, Compassionate, skilled, having reached the ultimate of the ten truths, Expert in mandala rites, knowing the explanation and conduct of mantras. The classifications of the Tantric Vajra Master will be discussed below. Although the characteristics are extensively explained, summarized as taught in the *Fifty Verses of Guru Devotion*: The common characteristics are six: stable due to an unagitated body, speech, and mind; disciplined due to possessing the mental trainings; wise with the ability to perfectly discern the Dharma; patient towards the actions of disciples, thus not becoming angry; straightforward, without deceit that conceals one's faults, and without hypocrisy that teaches untruths with the intention to deceive others. These are the six. The special characteristics are: knowing the practice of mantras for the four activities such as pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and wrathful deeds, and knowing the practice of tantras such as the six limits; possessing compassion for others; being skilled in the common treatises to the appropriate extent; having reached the ultimate of the ten truths; being expert in the work of drawing mandalas, having purely performed approaches (bhajana) and so forth, and comprehended the rituals of empowerment; knowing the conduct of explaining mantras in accordance with the faculties of the supreme, middling, and inferior (6a). These ten truths are divided into three sections, totaling nine. The common and special (characteristics) together total fifteen. If these ten truths are further subdivided, there are three categories. First, the ten truths essential for a Vajra Master are, as stated in the *Consecration Tantra*: Mandala, concentration
