Those who have obtained a human body like a wish-fulfilling jewel, who possess the wisdom to engage in practice in order to make it meaningful and not wasted, should first seek a spiritual master (virtuous friend) endowed with perfect qualities, and having found one, should rely upon them properly. There are three aspects to this. First, from the “Extensive Praise,” it is said: A singular path, and joyful means, Well-connected and without fault. Virtuous in beginning, middle, and end, A teaching like yours exists nowhere else. This means that embarking on the singular path to liberation and the joyful means of engaging in practice are solely connected to excellent results and are free from faults such as attachment (2b, a folio marker in the original text) and so forth. All times, from initial hearing, to intermediate contemplation, to final meditation, become the sole cause for higher rebirth and definite goodness. Therefore, in all respects, it is virtuous, and the source of benefit and happiness is only the Buddha's teaching; it is not found in the teachings of other teachers such as hermits and the Sāṃkhya (an ancient Indian philosophical school) and so on. The Bodhisattva Shantideva said: The sole medicine for the suffering of beings, The source from which all happiness arises, May this teaching, with gain and reverence, Long endure. This is exemplified by this prayer. Second, from the “Sūtra of the Meeting of Father and Son,” it is said: Having completely abandoned all eight unfree states, And having obtained the difficult-to-find perfect leisure, Those who have gained faith in the teaching of the Sugata, The wise should practice the yoga of reasoning. This means that making the precious human body of leisure and opportunity meaningful lies solely in having faith in the Buddha's teaching and engaging in its practice. Third, from the “Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines),” it is said: Thus, a Bodhisattva, a great being, if they wish to attain unsurpassable, perfect and complete enlightenment, should first approach virtuous friends, rely on them, and serve them. This is as stated. If one asks what kind of spiritual master (virtuous friend) should be sought, from the “Udānavarga (Collection of Utterances)” it is said: By relying on the inferior, people will decline, By relying on the equal, one remains in their own state, By relying on the superior, one will attain the supreme, Therefore, one should rely on those who are superior to oneself. Such a spiritual master also…

By relying on those whose virtues, such as discipline, extensive learning, and meditative concentration, are inferior to one's own, those who rely on them will not develop any virtues; instead, many faults will arise, leading to decline. By relying on those whose virtues are equal to one's own, there will be no increase or decrease in virtues, and one will remain as one is. By relying on a master whose virtues surpass one's own, it is excellent, as one will attain the supreme desired objective. Therefore, one should always rely on a venerable master who is superior and more exalted than oneself. \t\t\tFrom that very text it is said: \t\t\tDiscipline, near tranquil, \t\t\tWisdom, most supreme. \t\t\tIf one relies on such a master, \t\t\tEven from a master, one becomes supreme. \t\t\tThus it is stated. \t\t\tVolume 2, Part Two [The Rationale for Relying on a Virtuous Friend]: \t\t\tThe rationale should be sought through scriptural citations, reasoning, and analogies. \t\t\tThe necessity of relying on a virtuous friend is examined through three approaches: scriptural citations, reasoning, and analogies. \t\t\tFirst, from the *Summary of the Great Vehicle* (Mahāyānasaṃgraha) it says: \t\t\tExcellent disciples, endowed with reverence for their gurus, \t\t\tShould always rely on learned gurus. \t\t\tWhy is this so? \t\t\tBecause the virtues of the learned arise from them. \t\t\tThus it is stated. \t\t\tFrom the *Gaṇḍavyūha Sutra* (or *Flower Garland Sutra*, "Array of Trees") it says: "Son of noble family, all your virtuous dharmas arise from the virtuous friend. That virtuous friend is encountered after accumulating collections of merit and wisdom throughout ocean-like eons, and thereby one obtains the Dharma. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult to encounter, more so than finding a supreme jewel. Therefore, one should always respectfully serve them without weariness." Thus, endless scriptural citations arise. \t\t\tSecond, reasoning: Whoever desires to attain omniscience (the state of a Buddha), you must pledge to rely on a virtuous friend. This is because one cannot accumulate merits and purify obscurations by oneself. The corresponding analogy for this reasoning is like the Buddhas of the three times. Conversely, the analogy is like Pratyekabuddhas (solitary Buddhas), as illustrated by numerous such analogies. \t\t\tThird, analogy: From the *Biography of Paljung* (Śrībhava) it says: "The virtuous friend is like a guide who leads one onto the path of the perfections." \t\t\tAnd also from the *Biography of the Immovable Upāsikā* (Mi Gyowo'i rnam thar) it says: "The virtuous friends are...
